  1. Do you harvest your big leaves or do you keep them on to go through winter?

  2. And it's a great way to use yard waste! We did this with bark and shell chunks that broke off as we finished cutting down the hollow last 4 feet of a big maple tree. Part of what we filled the bed with was the "guts" of the rotting tree. My pumpkins and carrots loved it!

  3. the "water battery" concept, I've never thought about, absolutely amazing visual representation. Reading this shit in a book doesn't compare. Not very exciting but one of the most informative low key videos ever.

  4. I need to find the video of how you make your own soil! That looks amazing!!

  5. Bravo James! Best close-up demo of the results of a hugelkultur that I've ever seen! And I've watched MANY! The water! The mycelium! The root growth! I've never seen any of that before. Thank you! Hugs for Tuck.

  6. I followed your suggestion with my raised bed this past summer. It did well. I was wondering what would happen to the logs so it was good to see you dig them up! Gives us a good idea of what to expect.😊

  7. @James Prigioni Hey! I just watched this video! I love this method with raised beds. I will definitely be doing this on our property this spring. Thank you for the shout out! I love your channel! I will continue to watch and learn from your videos. Thanks again for amazing content. I will continue to support your channel.

  8. James I did this method this spring in my raised bed, absolutely love it, the soil sank alot so next spring I have to fill it more but loved the results in growing peas on trellis, then carrots, spinach, in front
Second planting of all those for fall was incredible..

  9. Species matters. Locust or osage take forever to rot. They were used for fenceposts, they are so resistant. most evergreens go away fast. if you want them to rot faster, use small pieces or even chips.

  10. Cool, hopefully this will help prevent people from wasting wood. My only concern is controlling which fungus and insects are in the wood. Wouldn't want a bunch of maggots and fungus potentially assaulting the roots

  11. James, you may find this fascinating. The Australian Eucalyptus tree (big trees) that exist in gold-bearing regions have been found to contain microscopic gold particles in their leaves. I suppose what happens is the deep roots hit a gold vein and some of it is absorbed in solution. Very cool!

So, money (gold) can and does grow on trees, which contradicts the age old saying that 'money doesn't grow on trees' 😅😊

  12. We use banana tree trimming and logs of the ones that have already grown bananas from and stick 2-3 in an 80cm pots, works a treat. They are after all just columns of liquid already.

  13. I had to rebuild several of my self wicking beds after about 6 months. I'd made the mistake of having too much of the bottom exposed to the soil and too much water was wicking up into the soil – drowning my blackberries – and they're very hard to kill. I had a big piece of dry firewood in the bottom of each self wicking tub when I put them together. After about six months, the wood was quite rotten and wouldn't come out in one piece. It was disintegrating very quickly thanks to being in contact with wet soil. And they were completely soaked with water, like the "sponge effect" you were talking about. I've also got four raised beds that are full of wood chips and logs under the soil. I'm sure the same thing is happening to them on the bottom.

  14. I did the same but ended up with so many centipedes , although it all got decomposed but centipedes are a problem now.
