I looooove the sumac. We have the native wild stuff and it's pretty, but I'd like the Tiger eyes to take over some expanses that we have on our land.
Also, Tiger eyes is a selection of native sumac. This makes it a plant that is aggressive, not invasive. (Unless perhaps there is no native sumac in your environs)
We call it The Weed Tree
You have so much space. You should have planted more.
When I was a little girl I would look at the sumac seed pods and thought they looked like poop! LOL Blessings from Ontario Canada 🙂
They're beautiful plants, I'm glad you're keeping them. If we wanted them but didn't want them to spread like weeds, would we be able to plant them in large pots and place them underground? Or would that not work long term? Do they grow like bamboo?
We had wild sumac in our pastures growing up. It was tall enough for us kids to stand under. Playing under the bright red canopy was like being in a fairytale.
Sumacs in pots would be a solution for gardens, just a suggestion.
Just watched a video of blue green conifers. Saw some that would look beautiful in your garden, Blue lace, and Blue ball, wow, could not believe the beauty of that mostly pine, Japanese maple garden! I think it was put out by Jim Putman.
I also have sumac. In areas where they can just go for it. However they started in my peony bed. Still pulling them.
Get a rid of them now!
I don’t think I would have planted sumac in the dirtlands. One small patch might be manageable but a river of the stuff😢 you might be getting yourself into more work than you want later down the road. Also you might want to keep it well away from neighboring properties. Just because you are willing to put in the work to keep it under control doesnt mean your neighbors are. I am in the position where every year i want to poison my neighbors white mulberry because the birds drop seeds all over my yard and all over the neighborhood and then they sprout everywhere. Someone had to take down part of a fence last year to get one growing between two fences. Beware of invasives. I wouldn’t plant anything that wants to spread like crazy. For my sake and my neighbors.
@ 3:15…..you better buy an excavator
Please reconsider planting Sumac. They will consume your property and your neighbours as well. Take it from me with decades of experience. Get a backhoe and bin them if you're wise!
Loved my Sumac at a previous home and a host of birds love Sumac too. Never had problems with it since I just either mowed over starts or clipped them off as they came up. Zone 5. I did use Sucker Stopper on starts coming up in my grass after taking down three Quaking Aspen and it seemed to work. Just clipped to almost ground level and dabbed a little on the leftover wound. Worked great so you might try that on the Sumac if the suckers come up where you don’t want to dig.
They are beautiful …..sounds like you are still somewhat sick in your voice …go east, dear one ….
My husbands forsythia did the same thing; it took months of digging for me to kill the growth.
I've been waiting for this video! Good to see it under control. Gorgeous plant, but I'm so afraid of planting anything that spreads under the ground .
So satisfying!!! Yay!
Sledging on the mounds over winter for the children would be wonderful.
