I have some theories as to why it failed as well. One of my theories is that there was just WAY too much stuff decomposing at once in such a small area without any ventilation. Mosses tend to be tough, but I guess even bryophytes like them have their limits. Another theory I have is that without any substrate, there also weren’t any multicellular detrivores. Without multicellular detrivores, I believe that the banana peel might not have been breaking down fast enough to avoid toxic levels of ammonia. Taking these theories into account, I’m planning for Compostarium 2.0 to be set up much more like an ordinary terrarium. It’ll consist of small amounts of moss, forest soil, pond water, and just about an inch and a half of banana peel rather than the whole thing. May fortune be on my side! 😁
P.S.: Opening the jar to dump everything out wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever smelled, but it was still pretty bad. 🤢

Aaaaw! I wouldn’t call it a failure. Look at what you all learned!
This is an interesting concept. I might dm you at some point to learn more
Needs more worms.
Sorry to hear this, but keep on experimenting. Your conclusions make complete sense. Maybe using materials that degrade at lower rate. Not sure since I am not an expert but love these experiments.
