  1. Providing adequate spacing allows each plant to receive enough nutrients, water, and sunlight for optimal growth. This is especially true when it comes to growing root vegetables like beet and carrot.

I will make it a habit to space out the beets better when I sow the seeds. I’ll keep the spacing to at least 3 to 5 inches and keep the rows about 12” apart. The spacing will be adjusted depending on the variety of course.

  2. YES, so true, I now always carefully and slowly plant my carrot seed to space each seed individually, takes a long time, the rows are 30 ft long, but saves me all the time and energy of having to thin them! Beets I am sometimes neglectful to thin and then just get puny small ones and a few bigger ones, next year I'll do better, I love beets! Oh, if you want a really wonderful sweet beet variety grow 'Merlin' !!

  3. Thank you for giving us your valuable experience. This will certainly help others to avoid making the same mistake!

  4. Great tips. I've wanted to grow beets and other root vegetables for a long time. Hopefully going to get started soon.

What basket is that, if you don't mind me asking? It looks very useful?

  5. I have done it many times, but I learned…the young leaves of beetroot are edible (mix it with other salad greens) and the top of carrots (leaves) are edible, too…good for making pesto. Like your garden…thanks for sharing.
