Up until a couple days ago I noticed a buildup of yellow stuff that was clinging to all the plants and the ground. I figured it was some type of algae that the snail could take care of
Today it seems like that yellow stuff has turned black, along with all 3 of the ramshorn egg clutches. I’ve seen this happen suddenly in a different smaller jar when suddenly everything is black and dead and smells putrid. I want to save this jar before it’s too late. What steps can I take to hopefully mitigate the Black Death?
It’s mostly just water and dirt scooped up from a local pond a month ago. I added 1 snail and a few plants after the fact and they seem to have done well so far.
The only thing that hasn’t done well is when I added some red root floaters. They seem to have been rejected and have all sunk down to the bottom or been eaten.
As far as other wildlife, I’ve spotted a lot of copepods, a lot of the little dancing worms, 1 bigger flatworm, a couple water fleas.”, and recently a few very tiny unidentified worms. Haven’t seen much at all in the way of rotifers, but it still seems fairly biodiverse.
