This Simple Tip Can Save Your Fall Garden From Cold

In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share a simple tip that can save your fall garden from cold. I am growing many cold hardy vegetables in my garden, but these cold crops can still be damaged by frost and freeze. Protecting plants from cold in certain situations is required, even if the plant is frost tolerant.

Some frost tolerant crops become tender when exposed to prolonged warm weather. We just had a long spell of warm weather, and now we’re getting our first freeze of the year out of nowhere. This can cause severe damage to plants, even frost tolerant plants. This is why I recommend this special kind of plant cover in these situations until the hardening off process protects plants from cold weather.

  1. Exactly right. I planted my broccs and cabbage 3 days before we got an unusually early freeze. All but 1 plant died. A freeze this early in S.Miss hit a lot of people by surprise.

  2. We had a freeze for 3 nights and I had to cover my crops but I didn't cover the frost hardy things because I wanted to allow the freeze to get to the beetles that were enjoying them a little too much. The plants came through just fine and I only saw 1 beetle afterwards

  3. As a New Englander, I'm surprised that it gets this cold down south. The coldest we've had is 35 degrees. I always thought winters in the southern states were more like spring.

  4. Hello, Two Minute Gardener. I was wondering if you have any advice about kudzu. My neighbor has property that is eat up with it, and it is rapidly beginning to encroach over here. Some of it is just on its own; some is attacking my azaleas. I live in southeast Alabama. My apologies if you addressed this already. I very much appreciate your channel and any feedback you may have about this topic.

  5. My cauliflower and broccoli were about 2 months old so I didn’t think they needed to be covered. However, our hard freeze went down to 26 or so for about 3-4 hours. The leaves burned but the plants seem to still be alive. How do we revive plants after a hard freeze? Thank you!

  6. I lost my green beans. We had been in the upper 70s and then we got down to 22 for three days. Now we are back in the 70s. Oh well. I did cover but they just couldn’t handle that severe of a weather change.

  7. Loving your channels so much! This is my first winter garden so I've been picking up as much info as I can from as many sources and I love that we're in the same state because your tips just feel even more helpful!

  8. Also in SE NC, and I didn't consider the "shock to the system" factor. Thankfully, my brussel sprouts came through just fine. Sadly, my green beans did not. They were just starting to produce.
