Free Buckets and an Abundance of Potatoes

The Hidden Potential of Free Buckets and an Abundance of Potatoes

We have been collecting free 3 and 4 gallon buckets from the bakery of our local grocery store since this past winter, and in the spring of this year, we planted a wide variety of potatoes in those buckets.

Now, just over 100 days after planting it is time for a 2023 potato harvest!

This is our first summer growing potatoes in buckets, and we weren’t sure what to expect given the size of the buckets, but we are very well pleased with the results. We grew a mixture of store bought red potatoes, french fingerling potatoes, purple viking potatoes, rocky mountain russet potatoes, and more.

In this potato harvest video, you get to see how simple it is to grow potatoes in buckets and how easy it is to harvest potatoes grown in containers.

Thank you so much for watching this potato harvest 2023 video!

  1. Whoa! Voles got into your buckets? That's just plain rude! We had a terrible problem with voles this year. But a continuous use of molex castor oil spray, as well as pellets and even some solar powered ultrasonic vibration sticks sent them away for several weeks. They did reenter the yard from the other direction, but tunneled over to the new raised beds that had screen under them. That was quite satisfying! Here in western Washington, we have the voles that tunnel underground and then dig up to eat the roots. The castor oil doesn't harm anything, it just deters them because of the scent. We love watching your videos!

  2. Get a "Painters Pen" in the crafts dept of the local Wally World to make permanent markers – won't wash off like the Sharpies do.
That does look like a good growing technique, at least for the smaller varieties.

  3. My most favorite way of harvesting potatoes. I can have a 100 of those buckets, and it would still want more. The kids love harvesting from them. We always compete to see who gets the biggest worms๐Ÿ˜‚
