Edible Gardening

3 Acre Off Grid Farmstead UK – Harvesting, Storing Crops & Growing For Winter – Vlog 19

We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest – Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 60-70% self sufficient in our food needs.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.

In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. Autumn is a busy and super rewarding time 🧡 This season provides us with such variety of beautiful, colourful and viberant nutritious crops and it also brings with it a sense of completion as we begin to work though the more timely seasonal jobs, clear away Summer planting and gather in and store our harvests ready for the quieter Winter months ahead.

We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment… maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we’ll message you a password for the ‘members area’ of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon’s 💚

  1. Congrats on your storage space! I can only immagine how good it feels to have all this harvest, that you put so much love into. It looks amazing! 👨‍🌾💚🌿

  2. I really, really, really need a poly tunnel like yours.

Have you ever considered installing a groundfridge as a root cellar storage?

  3. Harvested my first mature outdoor tromboncino earlier this week (it wasn't quite ready but it was showing a tiny bit of frost damage) – cooked some of it up, both roasted in the oven and steamed in a pressure cooker, and it tastes good. Should have another ~25kg to harvest in the coming weeks, so very happy with the crop this season and am saving plenty of seed for next year. Thanks for the tip to grow this useful and productive squash.
I still have nasturtiums flowering everywhere, plus a large number of ladybird larvae on them that are yet to pupate so i'm reluctant to disturb them until they've completed their cycle (need their help next year!). Meanwhile all my little winter plant plugs are being delayed going out, but it just seems like the right thing to do.
Any update on the success your friend had with growing the cherokee purple tomatoes outdoors this year? I'm still aiming to give them a try next season.

  4. I love the storage space. Its been such an odd growing year! I am about to say goodbye to our tomatoes, they have been awesome but everything else has been all out of kilter! We have our garlic, onions and leeks in and still have carrots to pull in the next few months. Feeling a liitle sad at the end of the summer/autumn growing and harvest season..i know thats normal but i hope to find the strength to push past that and fuel the winter crops. Best wishes to all you Uk winter growers! xxx

  5. Planted my winter onions, French and elephant garlic as well as shallot yesterday. Absolutely lovely storage. I’m so jealous 😊

  6. Hey Laurie and Dan! G'day from Down Under! In my food forest, I grow Macadamia Nuts and make milk out of them. Can you do the same with your Chestnuts? Cheers!

  7. Wow it's all looking so productive and beautiful, and your new storage shed is amazing 😍. You're so blessed with the chestnuts, I love them and we have about 3 or 4 chestnut trees in one of our hedges but they rarely produce edible fruits here in Shropshire, and any that do grow usually get eaten by the squirrels. I think maybe we're just a bit too far north for them.

  8. Do you have a video on the build of the storage space? Thanks–I'm enjoying your videos. They keep my morale up here on our Dartmoor homestead.

  9. Just found your channel and loving it, so now I’m a new subscriber
Looking forward to watching both your channel and farmstead grow
