****** About Living Traditions Homestead ******

Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.

We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

  1. Just and idea. To get the quail out when changing bedding. You could add a small door in the back that will lead into a cage to hold them while you clean it out.
    Love watching you guys.

  3. Something you could try…We use a cheap vinyl flooring on our coop floor. It protects the wood from moisture and rot. We also can roll it back up wash it if need be…although haven’t had the need to do that yet.

  4. I use solar gutter lights in my chicken coop and greenhouse. They are inexpensive and offer ample light. Amazon 29 for a six pack. We also use them on our grandsons play yard privacy fence

  5. I would have the dark tarp over half and the clear tarp over half, quail would probably feel more secure and if you had some kind of weird hot weather they would still have shade.😉

  6. Dear Kevin and Sarah,

I have followed with considerable interest your raising of quail. My interest piqued when you set up a hoop coop for your quail outdoors. I really enjoy how you think things through, and have now enhanced your hoop coop for more light. It certainly looks like a major improvement. I will be interested in the results. I also look forward to see how you will winterized it, and how this works out over the winter months.

    Sincerely,
    Larry Lewis

  7. You may find that it is better to have the light come on in the early morning rather then extend the daylight and quickly shut off. At least it works that way with chickens. Light coming on does't seem to bother them. However being light then suddenly going dark does not let them get ready for bedding down for the night. They are caught off guard not knowing when the dark of night is coming.

  8. What if you made a similar coup but with a roller at back, as well as a back hatch that opens you put a crank on rear roller like you have to lift side of greenhouse then with a heavy duty tarp make a conveyer so you can just open back hatch and crank the mess out into tractor bucket . So you have a tarp that fits over floor inside then bedding over top when its time to clean remove feeders etc open back hatch and scoot birds out into a cage then crank soiled bedding into tractor and just pull on front of tarp to put it back in place put fresh bedding and feeders back in then line up crate and let birds back in.

  9. i got a similar solar light for my horse shelter, then realized the winds would break the light. I found a similar solar light with metal mounting brackets for the lights itself. I hope it works for you. your coops look fantastic.

  10. I like your quail house that you built .Your last video where you put a clear plastic over the top which I think is a great is a idea .Why don't you just use shade cloth like you use on greenhouse this summer so they can have sun light but have shad to. there all type of shad cloth out there.

  11. Innovative on the lashing, but I’d just use sheet metal screws with the washers you used before. I just a night to day Solar light. It shuts off when the battery dies and recharges during the day. Never needs to be messed with

  12. I am in Sudbury, I Ontario
I would like to tell you that it would be easier if you made a little tiny house in there that they could be in and you wouldn’t have to pick them up. You could close them up at night. They would stay warmer in a little tiny house inside of their up off the ground All together. When you’re cleaning the coop, they would be all inside the house. You wouldn’t have to pick them up no stress and it will make it much easier for them to be in when it’s really cold you can close it and make them warmer from their own heat.

  13. Yall can put down vinyl flooring to protect the plywood flooring. I did that for my chicken coop. Works really well. Love your videos. God bless yall!

  14. If the timer on your light is like the one I have, you should be able to turn it on at a pre determined time, set the timer for 2-4-6 hours, and it will come on ever day at that same time, stay on for the appropriate number of hours, and turn itself off! Win for not having to do that every day!

  15. Won’t a black tarp hold more heat in the summer? Shade cloth over the clear maybe? Just wondered.

  16. I wonder if the deep litter method would work well in this situation? If so, you would only have to catch the quail and replace the bedding every year or two instead of every several weeks. Seems like the plywood was staying dry enough, that it might work!

  17. Hi Kevin & Sarah, I watched this ep. and was thinking about a little more shade for them, so if they want to get out of the straight sun they could. how about a piece of broad at the back of the coupe. My husband & I love watching Living Traditions Homestead. this is our first feedback though. Keep up the great work. See you on the TV.

  18. I have that same sort of thing set up as a little greenhouse for myself and I have to say that it doesn't stay that warm in the winter…just an fyi.

  19. I am surprised you didn't look for replacement cover for the small cheep hoop greenhouses. Ive seen some on line on Walm web shop in the simi clear same as your tarp. That would have given you ability to close ends if you got one with front & back door model. You coukd always get one to put over your clear tarp when winter hits even if only one doorway type it would work for winter & over your tarp it would insulate more.
