Roots and Refuge Farm: What I do when the world feels crazy (Resilience) | VLOG

Check out Beulah Roasting Co::: http://beulahroastingco.com/

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. And this is why I love you – I baked my bread and I've got tomatoes cooking down on the stove, and have been putting the garden to bed (no frost yet, but lots of rain). My neighbors bring me pickles and I send them home with tomato sauce. There is a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world, but those little community connections can help keep us sane. Building community = building resilience.

  2. So excited just ordered coffee!!!! 🎉
Fingers crossed chemo tastes will be gone before it arrives! 🤞

  3. Made it to the 16 minute mark and had to pause and say…. I love this message. Excellent. Just excellent.

  4. We hit 100° today. I’m pretty sure it’s the last time we’ll do that. I grew two tomatoes out of four plants this year. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ll keep trying. They do grow here. My jalapeños and basil are pretty prolific. At least there’s that. Thanks for encouraging me. Your farm is my dream. You help me feel calmer because if I cant grow things, I can barter. I’m wanting to learn to make olive oil, soap, herbal medicine, etc so I’ll have something someone who has food will trade for.

  5. Zone 8 in northern Georgia, no frost, we did have a 39°F night (early morning). I bless you 💕🤗💕

  6. Hahaha, "my sweet potato vine ate my chair". My Heavenly Blue Morning Glory ate my fence, my gate, the birdhouse on the pole. I know Morning Glory can be like a weed, but I love this variety & I don't really have a problem with them (this strain) volunteering the next year in my Minnesota garden, zone 4a. Our average frost date is Sept. 15th, but it has not froze yet. I have started cleanup though.😢❄️

  7. Whatever your videos turn into, I always enjoy seeing them, and always learning! Congrats on getting Beulah up and running, I know it's been a long haul and I admire y'all for hanging in there. I just ordered a bag of whole bean dark roast. I'll let you know how I like it, I'm sure it will be great. Would love to see you in the future add quality coffee and tea brewing accessories like pour over, french press, tea tools, etc.

  8. Central Minnesota zone 4b. Light frost. Harvesting everything that's left.❤❤grateful 💯😊

  9. I got my coffee and tea ordered! So excited! I sold my home and now in a transition period. So calm walks with you are such a wonderful blessing for me. Thank you!

  10. Hi from Iowa we have had a first frost now back into the 70s. We got our beds put to bed and the garlic planted. Blessings to all

  11. I have yet to make it to the end of the video, and by the title, I am guessing it’s more of a serious subject. But I just have to say, every time you film your ducks, at least a couple are walking together in unison and all I can hear are the ducks from AristoCATS in my mind😂 Please tell me I’m not the only 80s/70s baby that sees that?!?🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

  12. Blessings upon you all. Love your daily encouragements … inspired and created an indoor "grow cupboard", "heated sprout house", "glass salad shack", from repurposed wood, french doors and windows. May God bless your many efforts, your loved ones, friends and followers. All Because of His Son. Remember, Bethlehem was small indeed, yet look what has come from the Village of Bread … Our Saviour ~ rain, located on the southern most acreage Canada (same zone as southern PA)

  13. Jess, here in North Idaho we have not gotten a freeze yet. Typically is has come by the 10th or 12th of Oct. Beautiful fall weather in the 70s last couple of days. Thanks for talking about resilience because it is important. ❤

  14. My husband and I bought our first home last year, an 80+ year old bungalow in need of some substantial TLC. 💛One of the projects we’ve decided to tackle first is to install siding over some sheathing where a window used to be, so we went out and bought a small table saw to help with the work. However, it wasn’t until after we set the saw up that we realized — neither of us having ANY experience with power tools — that we may have bitten off more than we can chew.

Rather than abandoning the project altogether, I've been using it as an opportunity to practice learning how to use a handsaw, familiarizing myself with the way wood behaves and learning basic carpentry terms and skills in the hopes of building my confidence to a point where one day I’ll feel comfortable giving the “spinning blade of death” (as my husband likes to call it) a try. ☺ And if not, I'm also learning that there are actually a surprising number of things you can do with hand tools if you’re willing (and able) to put in the time. 👍🪚

p.s. I'm in Zone 3a, Alberta, Canada and our first frost happened on October 5, which was actually two weeks later than I was told to expect it. 🥳

  15. ❤❤ absolutely love the topic of this vlog. It's always been hard for me to discuss why I live the way I do. You worded it so well. Wisdom is the tool to survive a world gone mad.
Also you can eat the pads of the prickly pear cactus too.

  16. We are in northern Arizona at about 6000 feet we had one night dip to 35 a few weeks ago but some people not far for me got a frost. We expect it in two or three weeks looking at the forecast.
