If you want full size onions and not onion flowers, you want to grow your own transplants or buy them as ‘onion bunches’ at stores. They are both 1st year onions. When you buy the onion sets, the small onion bulbs, they are actually 2nd year onions and many of them produce flowers and not onions. As onions are flowering biennials.
