Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I run two pressure canners on uglies to stove all the time with no issue. I know there is a risk but no problem so far.

  2. I literally could feel you holding your breathe like you had explained in your health video. I hope you get the rest you need and take time for your healing this winter😊. I’m so sorry you’ve had a lifetime of chronic pain. I know how hard it can be 💕 God bless🙏🏻😇🙏🏻

  3. I am surprised I am harvesting green, red, and yellow green peppers. I am starting to have flowers on my sugar snap peas and green beans. My beets are starting to get large.

  4. Thank you Jess, this encourages me today. I'm trying to learn how to practice thoughtful planning for meals at 67 and alone. I know it can do nothing but benefit me financially and benefit my health as well.

Being a single person, AND rebuilding my pantry stock after being a wife has felt like climbing Everest. Im asking local farmers if there is a way to get a break on smaller bundles of beef or other meats for instance. My neighbor and I are talking of maybe shopping as a cooperative too. It will be work worthy of doing.

In the 55+ community where I live, so many eat poorly and mostly because they think its easier. Thats why I am now doing all I can to be learning one step at a time to be better at planning ahead. Im older but not dead!

Prayers are appreciated as my ultimate goal is not just for my own benefit but also to help other seniors here in the process.

We never stop learning no matter how old we are unless we buy the lie that old people arent.capable of learning new things.

The real poison the industrial food system has fed us is the idea that we should not have to think about our food.

  5. I too want to learn how to cook seasonally and what that looks like. ❤ @ProHomeCooks is a good resource! He has a small garden and gives great tips and tricks!

  6. Off hand , I’ve gotten ideas from you and I like Acre homestead for food inspiration. I know there is others but can’t think right now.

  7. I love to use eggplant in pasta sauce. If you like mushrooms in pasta you probably would like eggplant in pasta 😊

  8. Sweet Jess, the weather has changed here causing the barometric pressure to drop. This drop is causing pain for many….including myself😂.
I hope your pain subsides, and you get to relax, and rest a little. This recipe you're using sounds like something I need to check out. I have a question, does Jovial pasta taste like pasta? I actually seen it in our grocery store, I was tempted to purchase it. Usually I make my pasta, or I purchase Barilla.

  9. We always used shirt baskets😅 growing up. Now i have a couple harvest baskets. When living in Germany I would go to the produce market with a basket that had an orange material lined in it. My oldest remembers the basket.❤ she likes baskets to harvest in.😊

  10. Every year I get back on Azure’s website thinking I’m going to order but I can never find anything cheaper through them. Unless I buy 10 or so of something how is it worth it? I like buying bulk but to make it worth driving an hour to the pick up place at a specific time frame I kind of feel I should be saving a significant amount of money.

  11. Ive learned to can convenient meals. My husband has dementia, he thinks we need to eat out all the time, so i can different meals to fix quickly. He remembers the old days when he ate out all the time with his mom and dad when they retired. 😊

  12. I put cast on my flat top too. Gah! I’d give anything, but any born children,to have a gas stove again!
#1- Chef John- Follow him! Awesome recipes!

  13. The French think about food and talk about food 24/7/365. They are always thinking of their next meals and they view the making of food as a joy. I try to be more French in my eating.

  14. Don't forget in the Winter you also will be able to harvest Jeremiah's favorite the Brussel's Sprouts!

  15. This recipe looks wonderful! I love your videos, Meg Hollar and Becky from Acre Homestead. I hope you feel better soon. Prayers for your healing journey. Thanks so much for all you do in your videos!

  16. I love the Rainbow Plant Life channel. Nisha is so fun to watch. And even though we're not vegetarian or vegan, her ideas for ways to cook whole foods are so inspiring and always leave me excited to cook.

  17. You should feed the horn worm to the chickens….leaving it there to thrive will mean more moths and then worms next season.

  18. With purchase of my house it came with a glass top stove. I bought a large camp stove to do the heavy canning on. No way can l take a chance.

  19. If you can ever go back to sourdough, I dip my vegetables into my sourdough disguard and fry. It makes the most amazing tempura! I also have a reel where I stuff shishito peppers with fresh herbs and cream cheese then dip in the sourdough discard and fry…….legit good. Especially when the peppers are red ripe.

  20. I hope you feel better soon! I can tell you're not free well and I can totally relate to just keepin on with life when you're ill. It's good that you have Miah and older boys to help out when needed. Enjoyed hanging out with you while you cooked a delicious looking dinner!!

  21. That is what I have a problem with is what to do with my harvest! I have frozen, freeze dried, dried and cooked as much as I can. But it never seems to match what I'm harvesting. I like your mind set. You inspire me to plan a little better.

  22. Luckily for me, I am not fussy and will eat the same thing for nights on end. But when I do cook big meals I just cook very basic food – no real inspiration just home cooking – meat, starch, couple veggies and salads. Desserts i go through a number of old and new cookbooks. My basic moto is that it all comes out the other end! LOL…not quite the wording I use, but will keep it G.

  23. I have lost 55 pounds and my hubs has lost 120 eating human food. Becoming educated to the harmful things allowed into our food and the toxic way foods are processed. Heart-healthy items are lies! Our doctors and our health care system along with our food systems have become so broken it is nuts. Sadly we have found that people won't see how food affects their health is like talking about Jesus to an atheist, not interested. We don't have the space to grow our own meat so we went with Butcher Box and have since found out the meat mostly comes from Australia but could come from Canada and I worry about the mRNA vaccines they are allowing in organic meats without any notification that they do. Even here in the USA, some farmers are giving mNRA to beef, pork, and chicken so now we are looking again around for locally grown beef and pork. Not always easy. For food inspiration, I look to my history and cook the amazing foods my Mom cooked I just use substitutes for the flour, cornstarch, and other things to make them healthier and it works great. I do cook things you inspire me to try and fermenting more things. We are what we eat!
