This year was the first time I have ever had a tomato stem borer in my garden.
I leave them be, and I still have lots of tomatoes. They become a beautiful sphinx moth if they aren't parasitized by wasps first.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. I have faced this tomato hornworms every single year. I ended up using chemicals which I preferred "Not to". Now it is a bit late for tomato planting season, I will apply your method next season. Again thank you.
I have three tomato plants on my porch in a large pot. I came home one day after being gone for six hours and all the young leaves were gone! I very carefully looked and found four of these ugly caterpillars. I snapped off the twigs and crushed the ugly beasts with a stick. Next year I'll be watching sooner.
