Roots and Refuge Farm: Early October FULL Garden Tour | Fall Food Garden

Fridge Pickles: https://rootsandrefuge.com/quick-pickles-recipe/

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Jess you are an inspiration to me. I never thought I want to have a green house but last week when I went to the supermarket they had a mini greenhouse for sale $19.99 so I 🦘 jumped for the chance to try to start on my own instead buying seedlings. Will see if it works for me. I only wish I am 20 years younger so I can do more. Thank you❤

  2. Hi Jess, this is my first year growing sweet potato’s and I was wondering how you cure yours? Initially i was going to harvest when the temps were still quite warm and leave them on a sheltered rack outside but we had a significant temperature drop so I’m not sure what to do now. Nights are getting into the 50s, days 70s to low 80sand I don’t know how that would impact curing process

  3. Jess – I met you just earlier at FWYL and all I could say when I finally got to you was “can I hug you”, but please just know I really wanted to say so so so much more. I’ll condense it to say, you are like Church for me. I resonate with your testimonies and you just give me hope. Hope of a life that I am working & learning toward! You really do bless me ❤ Thank you!

  4. 28:09 Bitter melon is a good one to ferment. Salting it first gets rid of some of the bitterness, then you can flavor the ferment however you want, but slicing it and just replacing napa cabbage with it in a kimchi, or replacing radish in kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) works well.

  5. On a cold rainy soup and cornbread day I look forward to seeing you walk through your lovely, silly, wild and beautiful garden! Blessings 😉☺️🧡💛🤎

  6. Do you ever grow Fennel? I would love to learn how to grow Fennel bulbs here in zone 8a SC.

I think your reasons for growing as many berries as you can makes a TON of sense! Everyone would benefit from a financial standpoint, to grow if they can, fruit and vegetables that are the most expensive to buy in the grocery stores.

  7. Thanks for posting this! It keeps me reminded I still need to go plant those fall seeds and that I still have time! 😂 Your lemongrass reminds me of my mom and her essential oils. She loved essential oils and had them back before it was cool lol She even had an oracle probe thing for doing foot reflexology with them. And she'd do a raindrop therapy on me with oils.. omg I'd love one right now 😍

  8. Thank you for the tour. I would love to see how you harvest your lemon grass and see what you do with it.
I grow the milder white bitter melon and just chopped them up and put them in the freezer. I take them out and add them to all my soups.

  9. I know it would probably make your garden tours last half a day, but I’d love to hear about all the varieties and what ones you’ve loved or haven’t.

  10. Love a garden tour! Your garden is so inspiring. I am hoping for more volunteers next year, especially of flowers. I am moving the chicken in to clear the bugs and some weeds out tomorrow I think. So happy you had a great garden season, even if the cukes and melons didn't go as planned.

  11. Always good to drop by to visit and hear your news of all kinds , your farm is quite something Jess and so are you , in the very best ways..

  12. I'm favoured, $60K every week! I can now give back to the locals in my community and also support God's work and the church. God bless America❤️❤️❤️

  13. What you call eyesore I call beautiful (seeds! pumpkins! habitat for butterflies & moths for the winter)

  14. Have you tried smaller buckets or milk crates with air flow directly in, or close to, the flow of cool air from the mini split (for potatoes)? Might help them last longer (or dry out?). Or maybe some damp sand in the 5-gal buckets of potatoes (which might require some monitoring of moisture level). Curious to hear what methods you use/try and how they work.

  15. Thank you Jess for the tour. I'm curious if you will plant onions from seed or starts or the little bulbs? I plant garlic in October and was thinking I should try onions through the winter. Any thoughts I would appreciate. Again thank you Jess. I bless you

  16. One of my customers just told me about a productcalled Over the Top. He sa7s it's organic and you can spray it over veggies, flowers, anything, and it will only kill, weeds, bermuda, nut grass, stuff like that. I haven had a chance to look i to it yet, but i didn't want to forget to tell you about it. He said a nursery, here, called Digger O'Dell sells it, so ill check it out as soon as i can.

  17. Loved the Tour! I tried to plant a second planting of beets and spinach, but neither one germinated.. When you do succession sowing, do you do it in the same bed or in a different area altogether? Have you talked about “the NO dig garden”? When you pointed out the tomato plant that was cut down and left in the soil, I wondered if you do that to all of them? How long would it take to breakdown & would it interfere when its time to plant in the spring? I’m a “backyard farmer” & have limited space. Your garden tours always get me to thinking. You can’t imagine how I look forward to your videos.
