How to sharpen your Okatsune hedge shears

Okano shows how to sharpen the Okatsune hedge shears, using the whetstone.

1. Soak the whetstone (Okatsune 412) in water.
2. Sharpen the small cutting edge at an angle of 23°.
3. Sharpen from the inside to the tip 10-15 times.
4. Flip the shears and sharpen the other side at an angle of 15°.
5. Sharpen from the inside to the tip up to 5 times.
6. Repeat these steps for the other blade.

If necessary, rust and dirt on the blade surface can be removed carefully with the whetstone or very fine sandpaper (P600). You can leave the black rust, this has a protective effect. Do not forget to oil the moving parts every now and then.

By properly maintaining your tools, they will last for many years. Happy pruning!

  1. You make it look so easy when you sharpen at different angles, but how exactly can one gauge the difference by hand between 15 and 23°?

  2. This is a top level professional tool for a professional user but also for a professional sharpener. This is art.
