Make Your Plants Grow Twice As Fast With FREE GREENHOUSES!

In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share how to make your plants grow twice as fast with free greenhouses you can make at home out of trash. You can quickly and easily turn gallon milk jugs or gallon water jugs into free homemade greenhouses that trap warmth and protect against frost to give your seedlings and transplants a big boost.

Cool fall weather will slow plant growth. By providing additional warmth to young plants, you’ll speed up their metabolism for faster growth since plant growth rates are based on soil warmth and air temperatures. This free greenhouse design traps warmth during the day, but they allow venting of excess heat with the cap off. If a frost is coming, you can place the caps back on at night for a frost protection barrier.

  1. Great tip… as always 😊
The high today in Texas zone 8b is 94° 🥵 Looking forward to cooler weather 😊

  2. Thank you!!!! This is a solution I’ve been searching for. I thought I was going to have to move my beds to a sunnier location!! You saved me days of work and a whole lot of energy. We’ve got warm weather in zone 8 but not enough sunlight.

  3. Excellent tip. We have the same problem here in so cal. Usually it’s hot into November – the last few years it’s gotten to 100+ in mid November. This year it’s so cool already (althought it’ll be into the 90’s later this week). I can’t keep up with this weather. 😩

  4. Oh yes. Mother Nature is never predictable. Good to be prepared for anything! Thanks for another great video 👍🏼

  5. How do you protect the jugs from just blowing over in a stiff wind? I see pile the dirt up but any other thoughts. We get high winds all the time.

  6. Great video! I also use halves of 5 gallon water jugs and call it our bubble garden. Greens grown in-ground along a south wall of our home made it through the winter — in zone 5b/6a! I let a few pad choi go to flower for stunning spring color in planters. Early food for pollinators too.

  7. That was great! Thank you. Would this method work if the temperature went to freezing? Living high desert means we can get unexpected freezes through May.
