  1. My Pink Muhly Grass has not bloomed ay all this season. It is 4 or more years old. Do you think I should divide it next spring? Thanks

  2. I, too, am in zone 7 but in VA. Am I correct I should not prune my boxwood now b/c of cold weather risk to freshly cut branches? And if not, then when – early spring?

  3. Do you ever use “Chip Drop” for mulch? I tried and got local fresh mulch from mixed oak and maple. Lots of green leaves in there too.

  4. I have a courtyard type garden- wider then deep – while pet sitting my son’s dog , he killed my pencil holly! I watered to dilute the pee but to no avail! I’m guessing it was a mix of him and me that killed it? When can I replant? ( obviously when he’s gone!) thx

  5. Jim + Stephany: What's the brand/color name of the lovely light blue on your shed (+ new siding?) & the slightly darker tone of blue on the shutters, please? TY!

  6. We plan on leaving as much of our perennial’s dieback in place over the winter as possible. It may be untidy but at least it is something to look at. We do tend to tie the dead stems on larger plants together both for neatness and to let us work around them more easily. Another reason to leave them is that it is a lot easier to locate them in early spring.

  7. Hi Jim 👋 there is our precious Ms Holly 😍 This was another great informative video. Thank you for always taking time out of your busy schedule to do these videos.

  8. I’m in 6b ( southern Missouri) and my elephant ears always come back as well as dahlias , canna and Cala lily it surprises me even in some really cold winters but in all fairness I have them planted around the foundation creating a microclimate and mulched

  9. The timing of this video is IMPECCABLE. I was going to search for “fall garden checklist” but this was the top recommendation when I opened YouTube.

  10. Mr. Jim, my question for Sunday is What is the difference between a confier & boxwoods, arbervit……..

  11. I have been influenced to buy quite a few shrubs and small trees to plant this Fall. Over time, and especially after seeing Ram’s garden, I’ve started landscaping with Japanese maples in varying heights, as well as evergreen shrubs. Much of my garden is six years old, so the scale has increased. Now, many perennials are ground cover, whereas, they once held all my attention.

  12. Hi Jim, zone 7B Richmond, VA area. I found some golden rain tree seeds last spring at William & Mary. I planted them in plastic tree tubes and they sprouted. They are now 8" tall or so. Would you plant them in the ground now, or overwinter them inside and let them grow in a larger pot throughout next summer? Love what you do and find it so helpful to get advice from a knowledgeable source living in the same general area as I do!

  13. Thank you for mentioning the fertilization of some plants due to deficiencies. I planted three queen palms last year ans did not fertilize from Nov. – Feb.
When they started to leaf out in March the fronds showed signs of "frizzle top". due to my poor N. FL soil and the fact that queen palms are particularly needy and I panicked a bit.
They were fine once they were back getting what they needed but it was a lesson I would have prefered not to learn the hard way
I plan to fertilize my queen and mule palms this Nov.

  14. Jim,
Did ya'all add the Tree of Life decoration over the window of the shed recently? I really like it. 😊

  15. Jim,
I planted Brad's Atomic Grape tomato several years ago. Stunning colors, plus it held tight to the stem, so you could actually use it in flower arrangements. Only problem, the skin was thick & tough & the taste was merely eh, @ best. 😝

  16. Hey Jim, I have a Jazz Hands spring planted Loropetelum that got hit by the extreme texas heat. All of the leaves fried but didn't drop. The stems still seem to be alive. Should I strip the leaves?

  17. Wish it would rain here!!! 🤍🤍🤍🪴🪴🪴🍁🍂🍁🍂🤍🖤🤎🤍🖤🤎🤍🖤🤎 soooooooo ready for Fall!!!!! No more 90 degrees please!

  18. Always great instructional videos!! I know you usually point about trees above your garden, it’s been a while since I’ve seen some drone shots, can you please for some pointers on what’s under the bigger trees. Thanks as always!! 👍🏼

  19. Regarding fertilizer in October…can I still add organic slow release fertilizer ie: Hollytone etc, to my soil mix when planting new plants like conifers? Or even young trees like a Redbud for instance? I mix composted pine bark, native soil from the hole and a bit of composted manure along with a few hand fulls of organic fertilizer when I put in what I call a “New Hire” in my yard. Thank you for another great video!

  20. Another great video, Jim!! LOL… always feel like I should take notes, so I don’t miss anything 😅!! Thank you much!!

  21. Hey Jim, I live in zone 9b and parts of my garden is clay soil, I wanted to know should I mix compost in the soil then put mulch on top, am I wasting time and money doing both?

  22. Jim mentioned that he put some of the potted shrubs into the veg garden to overwinter. If I heard him correctly. I like this idea. Does it affect the nutrients? I have a gardenia that I will do this with. Not sure if it’s final placement yet but I want it in the ground.

  23. Hi Jim, I have a question about two plants-

I cut back an established rose of sharon last fall and it grew back beautifully. But, some of the branches grew back very soft and they broke under the weight of the flowers, not sure why?
The same issue has happened to my Crimsoneyed rose-mallow.
Any ideas? (live in the Lower Mainland of BC, 🇨🇦)
    Thank you

  24. What is the name of the 6-foot golden shrub over Jim's right shoulder? It looks attractive. I have about 50 bags of leaves I use to protect plants against winter damage. I find bags of leaves are rarely mentioned as winter protection for plants.
