Roots and Refuge Farm: Filling the Gaps (Sowing Root Veggies) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Every time I see your beautiful table top leaning I cringe … so fearful it will fall tho I’m sure it is so sturdy it won’t

  2. I love your higgeldy piggeldy seed planting and as you say, at the end of the day it is food we eat, what does it matter what variety it is

  3. “I’m gonna be real…I don’t think that’s for me” -Jess, after crunching into a wasabi radish like an apple 😂😂 yes, fermented or in small bits… Maybe a thin slice on your sushi??

  4. Good afternoon Jess really enjoy your videos so much doubt I'll be sowing a fall garden this year having alot of problems with my legs n hips n trying to help with my granddaughter thats special needs her moms finance has cancer n has to go to Knoxville for treatments so that takes alot of my time but its ok

  5. I just put a bunch of seeds between sprouts this morning. I can't stop LOL. I love seeds, I love soil. I found a volunteer tomato plant behind my pole beans. It made me so extremely happy lol. Sow Sow Sow!!

  6. Salvia leucantha, Mexican bush sage comes in purple like yours and a deeper purple and white variety. I used to work at the Greenery in HHI and we would always sell a ton of these when they burst into glorious bloom this time of year! Love the fuzzy flowers and leaves!

  7. Sigh, I’m just figuring out what beds to shut down for winter. It’s predicted that it will be a cold snowy winter. I do have some beans, cabbage, carrots and iceberg lettuce should be OK up to freeze up but only chickens in the winter gardens here. 🇨🇦 and the girls may be choosing to stay mostly in the coop this year.

  8. You call it filling in the gap I call it tucking it in, but I’m gardening on a much smaller scale. I start with a good map/plan for the garden then I tuck in a basil seedling here or tuck in zinnias there. Like you say you end up with a hodgepodge, but man that’s just my aesthetic and I’m not sorry about it.

  9. I made a green enchilada sauce from green tomatoes last yr. My family liked it better then the sauce made with the tomatillos

  10. I think that Mexican bush sage can be grown from cuttings, if you want to try that. It sure is pretty.

  11. FYI. I had a bunch of Greek oregano that I didn't get out and cut back in time because I was sick. From now on I will always leave a bunch to go to seed and flower because the bees absolutely went nuts over it.
