Since we’ve gotten here at Flock, we’ve placed a big emphasis on native plants to our state and ecoregion. Though we have some excellent native plant nurseries in the area—they don’t grow every variety and they often don’t sell plants as plugs. Plugs are essentially young plants that are two to eight months old and have a range of benefits—one being economical.

This is a great topic. I find the plugs very useful for planting in my established woods because, as you note, there are many roots and, in my case, rocks. With adequate water many plug plants will grow fairly quickly. Plugs work very well for carex and ground covers. Sometimes I find that certain plants do better in some locations if I plant them as larger sizes especially if there is critter pressure. So, as with so many things gardening, you have to experiment a bit. Growing out in containers usually requires a lot of watering but you can also grow out plugs in raised beds or other more coddled garden beds. We have such great native plants in the Northeast. I am fighting lots of invasive weeds on my property but the other day I visited a spot that is a bit isolated and it was filled with asters, different types of goldenrods and native grasses — truly glorious.

Really great, thanks for sharing resources! If others have large properties to fill with native plants that are fairly easily to grow from seed, buying deep cell flats and native seeds and growing plugs at home is really rewarding!

Beautifull garden. Very well put together. I feel like every year you see a weed you should replace with a plug over and over until its an overgrown jungle of plants densely planted ontop of each other just flowing out.
1. My compliments on your squatting technique (vs bending over, sitting, kneeling) while planting plugs. Many benefits to hip mobility, digestion, quad aesthetics and longevity correlations as well as practical considerations.
2. I really envy you for finding New Jersey Tea plugs from a large nursery-tea, beauty and nitrogen fixing. I try to support local growers as a principle but 80% of the time the plants don't grow well and/or are mislabelled vs the large nurseries. You'd think being local and smaller quality could be better. I hope this is just my problem. So I could only get 1 New Jersey Tea to grow from my local pot purchases. They are really hard (for me) to start from seed successfully stratification and all. Have you actually had the tea from the leaves? I hear about it all the time but have never talked to anyone living who has drunk the tea.
3. You mentioned exposing weed seeds while planting. You used your hori hori to create a hole by pulling up soil from within the hole. Given your nicely loose soil, what do you think about the technique of using a trowel: held in a fist pointing downward with concave side facing you, stabbing downwards into the soil, pulling towards you, dropping in the plug and pushing soil forward to secure plug.. Hole is created, but soil stratification (and weed seed exposure) may by less disturbed as most of the soil movement is horizontal rather than vertical. I've found it faster when doing hundreds of plugs~15s/plug. Are their downsides to this approach (assuming loose soil).?

I bought plugs for the first time this year at a local native nursery…. I CAN just wait for the plant to grow! (This is always my approach)😄. I would hope nurseries all over would try this and see that people will buy natives and buy plugs, or 4"containers and we do with our beloved perennials. I'm disappointed in the lack of straight native species at local nurseries. And when i do find them, theyre $30 a gallon….well…I can't do $30 a plant. And that's coming from someone who appreciates all the benefits of natives. If we're trying to make a difference here, I think that needs to change.

Izel is great. I ordered and planted about 700 plugs from them and Prairie Moon Nursery back in May. You can usually pick your shipping dates and the plugs are well packaged and protected

Fall planting is the best for root development. I think you may be surprised by the growth of these plants next year.
Great alternative for plants .. Other than what's available in big box stores. And the native plant will have a better chance of survival. Thanks for sharing this great information and resources. Can't wait to see the beds come together, just like the rest of your gardens.
