The nine variety of our Asian Pear fruit trees are – Atago, Hosui, Kosui, Niitaka, Olympic (Korean Giant), Shinko, Shinseiki (New Century), Shinsui & Yoinashi. We planted them bare roots. If you want to find out how to plant bare root trees please check out our tutorial video on that topic.

Our last updates were on 2017 . The fist set of videos we did on these nashi trees were done in 2013, therefore we could also consider these updates as “ten (10) years later”, although the first few trees were planted between 2009-2010. So most of these nashi trees are about 15 years old.

Shinko is a medium to large size pear, very sweet and juicy. The fruit has a refreshing crispiness to boot with an attractive smooth russet/orange skin. Fruit flavor remains excellent in hot interior climates. The fruit is medium to large (14-20 oz.), round and flattish, with an attractive brown to golden-brown russet. The flesh is yellowish-white, crisp, and juicy with a distinctively rich, sweet flavor. It ripens about a week after Yoinashi and two weeks before Olympic. Shinko will store well for three-four months; it is an excellent winter keeper.

The tree bears heavy, but still crops annually. This variety has shown good resistance to fire blight. Harvests late September.

Seedling of Nijisseiki, selected in Japan. Introduced in 1941. Distinctive rich, sweet flavor. Fruit medium to large size. Attractive golden russet skin; firm, crisp flesh. Ripens mid-October in New York. Fine winter keeper. Very productive. Much less susceptible to fireblight than most asian pears

Large to medium fruit with excellent quality, yellow-white flesh, and a sweet juicy flavor. Skin is brown to golden-brown russet. Tree is moderately vigorous to a medium size. A heavy bearer that shows some fireblight resistance. Storage life is 3 to 4 months. One of the more popular varieties.

MATURITY DATE: SEPTEMBER 25

Often Asian pears are called apple pears because they are crisp and juicy like apples but with a different and distinctive texture. They also are called salad pears, Nashi (Japanese for “pear”), Oriental, Chinese or Japanese pears (Nihonnashi). All Asian pears today are selected seedlings or crosses made within Pyrus serotina.

The fruits may be smooth and thin-skinned, in colors ranging from moonlight yellow, and yellow-green, to caramel, or they may be russeted shades of these.

  2. if the Shinko is not producing that well maybe your dad could try grafting some of the other varieties that you do like onto the Shinko and using it like a root stock. or maybe try grafting some varieties you don't currently have in the backyard but some people who watch your videos might donate a branch or two.
