Kosui: Asian Pear Nashi Update 2023 Part 8 | Fruit Trees In My Dad’s Backyard Mini Orchard

Kosui is one of the best tasting of all Asian pears. It is a reliable bearer of medium-to-large, delicious fruit. The russeting of the skin lends a nice, nutty flavor to the eating experience. The flavor is plentiful with an essence of honey, vanilla and some butterscotch too. This is the 8th of the 9 variety in our backyard mini orchard, but the 9th video in the series of updates on our Nashi for 2023. The nine variety of our Asian Pear fruit trees are – Atago, Hosui, Kosui, Niitaka, Olympic (Korean Giant), Shinko, Shinseiki (New Century), Shinsui & Yoinashi. We planted them bare roots. If you want to find out how to plant bare root trees please check out our tutorial video on that topic.

Our last updates were on 2017 . The fist set of videos we did on these nashi trees were done in 2013, therefore we could also consider these updates as “ten (10) years later”, although the first few trees were planted between 2009-2010. So most of these nashi trees are about 15 years old.

Kosui Asian Pear, also known as Kikusui is regarded by many as one of the highest quality nashi – superb fresh eating. It is crisp, sweet, low-acid, very juicy, and watery. As a matter of fact, Kosui mean “Good Water” in Japan where it originated. Kosui is a medium-large round Asian pear that ripens in late August, just after Hosui and Shinseiki. The fruit is covered with a light green to yellow-bronze russet. Flesh has sweet, light flavor of vanilla and does not brown when sliced.

Our research indicates that this variety is easy to grow and one of the best, but it wasn’t the case for us. Some of the branches seemed to be drying and dying randomly. The branches are willowy, brittle and easily snapped. It grows upright and tall but skinny. Maybe it’s just our soil, USDA Zone or we’re just not lucky.

Estimated Chilling Requirement: 450-500 hours below 45°F
USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5 – 9
Pollination: Partly Self-fruitful (better with other Asian pears such as Ishiiwase or 20th Century)
Maturity Date: August 23
Harvest Dates: August 5 to August 23

Often Asian pears are called apple pears because they are crisp and juicy like apples but with a different and distinctive texture. They also are called salad pears, Nashi (Japanese for “pear”), Oriental, Chinese or Japanese pears (Nihonnashi). All Asian pears today are selected seedlings or crosses made within Pyrus serotina.

The fruits may be smooth and thin-skinned, in colors ranging from moonlight yellow, and yellow-green, to caramel, or they may be russeted shades of these.
