In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share why fall, NOT spring, is the perfect time to plant raspberry and blackberry plants. Most gardeners growing raspberries and growing blackberries don’t get a harvest the first season because they plant them at the wrong time. I recommend planting them now, because it will double your berry harvest your first year!
Raspberry and blackberry plants are widely adaptable fruiting canes that, depending on the variety, can tolerate temperatures as cold as Zone 4 and as warm as Zone 9. This means if you live in temperate and many subtropical regions, you can grow blackberries and grow raspberries. However, plants take time to establish after transplanting, and many varieties only fruit on floricanes, which only develop after the primocanes have matured. This means most blackberries and raspberries planted in spring will not fruit the first season. Fall planting blackberries and raspberries can provide months of establishment so they can bear fruit their first growing season.

i'm in zone 4b but my chester blackberry is hardy down to zone 5
Thanks for explaining π
This is true! My first season of growth with my thornless blackberries I got no fruit. And on the second year I got lots of fruit but it was very sour. Now in season 3 I am getting sweet fruit and 2 harvests. I think your advice will help with fruiting and with getting sweet fruit as well. Great information I wish I had known this when I was planting my blackberry bush.
Can you mow the whole patch if not growing on primacane and harvest from new growth in summer?

Awesome garden tip!! Thank you ππ
I put out 3 Chandler variations, and they are thriving. But my Anne died off π’
You are shooting the video in the rain for us. Thank you. π
September in arizona, none of the nurseries or big box store look anything like that.ππ
Do I need to cut back old growth each fall too?
What if I bought them in the spring, but they didnβt really do anything in container bags? Is now a good time to relocate them into the ground? They were basically a single stick with roots, neither did well. Thanks so much for your videos! They are always helpful!
yes I did the planting all wrong on my blackberries
Thanks for the tip, MG!π
Itβs unfortunate that a lot of nurseries only take preorders for shipment in the spring. They arenβt selling in the fall.

I've been watching your videos for 3 or 4 years now & I've often wondered : because of everything you've planted up against it, how is it going to be when it comes time to replace your fence?
