Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I tried fermenting last summer and got several nice ferments. My husband and I don't use a lot of salt and we found them way too salty to eat. I used the proper ratio of salt to water and it was just too much for us. 🙁

  2. I started dumping the pet rabbits bedding and poop on my beds in preparation for the spring. Well it rejuvenated the plants already in there. Went out this morning and I have lots of cow peas. I can make this. Thanks Jess

  3. Just yesterday, I was beating myself up about not filming more of my canning/kitchen projects for YouTube. This video made me feel so understood. I am the same way in the kitchen, all over the place. I can barely keep track of my recipe, let alone my camera angles. Thanks for taking a moment to share and for making me feel less alone in this particular aspect of ADHD, Jess! 💚

  4. Tried making GF starter and it blew up all over my kitchen … good luck.

Also do not put your starter next to your other ferments … they can ruin your starter

  5. I want to tell you we have been trying all summer to grow Kajari melons. At the beginning of spring, we added two new raised gardens and a cattle panel for them. Nothing all summer! Our son kept encouraging us to keep trying. Finally, today we have a Kajari melon 5" long and about 5" wide! So glad I didn't give up!

  6. I had no idea what that spring thing was used for. So thank you. I learn so much from you, even the most simplest things.

  7. 😂😂😂😂😂 30 seconds in when jess says the dogs bark at the farm equipment, my dog Started woofing at it.

Yesterday he kept running outside to bark at the neighbors chickens because of Jess' chickens

  8. Jess, what is the spring thing you put in your fermented jar and what is it used for? Also, one of your knives is very interesting. It has holes in the blade. What is that specific knife used for? As always thank you for an awesome video!

  9. Hey Jess. The plant at the beginning of your video that you weren't sure about. I'm pretty sure it's a Confederate hibiscus. The blooms are white in the morning and a dark pink by evening.

  10. I love Call The Midwife! Such a great show. Do you find yourself pushing with the mammas? Lol. Love learning about the era as well

  11. I LOVE Call the Midwife too! Girl, we watch a lot of the same shows. I love historical fiction/drama it’s so much fun! I’m also someone who gets distracted and often starts more projects than I finish. It’s part of being creative and inspired beyond my capacity I think. I appreciate you being open about the challenges that you face. It makes me feel like I’m capable of more than I’m doing. It’s always a blessing to hang out with you Jess. Until next time ❤

  12. Pro tip: Make your “kitchen day” on the day other family members are supposed to cook dinner! I used to do this with my kids. When my kids were teens they both got heavily into learning to cook. ( I was so proud) I would take those days when they were to cook dinner and spend the day baking or canning/preserving, prepping other meals. That way by dinner time I could sit down and relax while they cooked the evening meal. Worked out great!

  13. Oh, you wouldn't enjoy the hot sauces i am fermenting habanero, scorpion & sugar rush peach peppers. They make amazing Christmas gifts

  14. Those leaf footed bugs drive me crazy! They always decimate my later season tomatoes. Constantly spraying them with insecticidal soap but they multiply so fast! Any suggestions?
