  1. Over here in France we call the chopped straw stuff " Chanvre" and it's really good on all your raised beds to keep weeds down and the soil damp. I've put it on my onion bed and strawberries to keep the fruit clean. It breaks down well so good for raised beds.

  2. Going to have to get me some straw for my spud buckets had the same problem as you Tony drying out last year. I'm on the east coast as well but in Norfolk
    Keep up the great work

  3. Hi Tony,

Love the vids, always a pleasure to hang out on your plot. Volunteer taters could come from tater peelings in your compost that haven't completely rotted…

    Cheers Steve

  4. I was talking to tony about this as ive taken it up a notch further, ive combined your tomato planting idea with this , so all my toms and various other thing are in bottomless pots then mulched to help with water retention

  5. great vid again , thank you very much! would love to see you doing more vids on the bees too ,ide love to have a go with them

  6. Not sure how true this is but was talking with Mr Charles Dowding last year and he mentioned something about oil seed rape being sprayed with some sort of pesticide called aminoopyralid which if introduced to the compost system could damage crops. Stephanie Hafferty also mentions this on her website. Don't wish to be a scaremonger but when I saw you top the spuds up with this stuff I suddenly remembered what was said

  7. Ah tony. I shall shout about your channel to all who will listen. You’re not just a garden channel, you’re a friendly face and a little piece of escapism for us all. Thank you for continuing to put so many videos up! You’re an inspiration 😊👍🏻

  8. Just watch the slugs with the straw Tony they love hiding under the straw. I done the same and they have eaten loads of my potatoe leafs

  9. Everything is looking great! Something came to mind when I saw the paths, plenty of room for a few pots dotted around there!? Maybe for some flowers for the girls (Bees & Mrs S)!!!!

  10. Best gardening channel out there! 😂 part of my lockdown routine on a night watching these after the kids are in bed, and inspired me to get a greenhouse!

  11. Come on Tony, every video yr gonna prick out the plants by yr tunnel, and every video they are still there, it'll soon be winter again and to late 👍👍

  12. I always screw up my potatoes – they end up being an ornamental, never food 🙁 Come to think of it, I'm not good at anything underground really (carrots, leeks, onions, radishes). Thankfully, they are not expensive to buy. But organic fresh greens I'm good at!!
I'm eyeing your chard bed… My favorite way to eat chard is sauted with onion in salt & butter and add scrambled eggs. For a yummy platter, you need plenty of chard!! Because it's an ingredient, not a garnish, that's why.

  13. You must have been watching Simplify Gardening he said the same thing about mulching potatoes a week ago.

  14. Great job Tony, those potatoes are gonna love that straw. it will keep them hydrated and make your life with watering much easier. great video pal

  15. We're spending our spare time in our Mark Watney gardens, since every time we go to the store for supplies we run The Gauntlet.

  16. I mulched up 6 tubs of strawberries with wool a mate gave me (he gets frozen food delivered, and they use it for insulation).. Came back this morning had not a bloody strand left. These birds don't miss a trick.

  17. As an alternative to buying mulch, i use an old office paper shredder to shred plain brown cardboard, and use that like others use straw or hay. It works great, and the potatoes, onions, garlic have no trouble pushing up through it, but it suppresses weeds and keep sin the moisture.. There's plenty of free cardboard available at the office or at pretty much any shop for the asking, and I fill bags with the shreddings a bit at a time all winter. By spring I've got several big, construction site refuse bags full. The worms and fungi seem to like it, and It's mostly broken down by the following year. I find that after one or two waterings/rains, it mattes down and doesn't blow away. Unless you look closely, you'd never know it's just shredded cardboard.

  18. How are your carrots coming on? I sowed mine directly on the 18th of April but no sign of anything yet (nor for the beetroot). Is that normal?

  19. Great content tone, but no mash up's today, but beware the day is going to come when you will be suited and booted on your plot because of the bee,s
man, there were hundreds out today but wait until it gets hot and there are thousands. promise I won't laugh when you get stung.
    All the best Arthur

  20. I'm trying some of my potatoes in pots this year, so I'd better learn from you and actually water them enough so t I get a good crop!

  21. My morning regime.
    Wake up.
    Take dog for a walk.
    Have my breakfast.
    Watch your video.
    Go to my allotment…
Some times when I wake up I can't be bothered to do anything, then I watch your video and get my bottom off of my chair.. thank you for the encouragement…😊

  22. Interested to see how you feel about the location of the bee hive? Are you feeling like it's cutting off that bit? Will you be able to go closer once properly established?

  23. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Hi Tony , nice update , can I ask what you do with your chard please ? I'm growing it for the first time this year and not got a clue what I'm supposed to do with it 🙈🙈😂😂. Do I use it like a lettuce or spinach raw in salads or treat it more like I would a cabbage or kale?
    Best wishes
    Steve

  24. Hi Tony i watched the same vid as you and have covered 5 tubs with shedded carboard and 5 with grass clippings. I have all ways filled the tub no earthing up . Like the daily vids
