Roots and Refuge Farm: I’m sorry. (Opinions, butchering and apologies)

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thank you so much for talking about this. Your candour is why I keep coming back to this channel.

  2. Hello Jess I don’t comment often but love your videos. Just wanted to thank you🙏🏼💗😉 First of all you are living what you are sharing, not just talking or speculating about it. Also refreshing to see someone facing real problems/ solutions…food sources, family values, public personas…no way everyone agrees on everything, no one controls anyone else, & not all people are in the same place in their spiritual/ personal growth. That’s the reality of this life. It’s awesome to see you embrace all of it, & be exactly who you are. Thank you😉

  3. Authenticity and Transparency are what we humans always say we want from others— more humans should live by it and the World would be filled with more respect, and more peace and joy! Thank you for living honestly.

  4. I will be 65 next week. I 'somehow' first saw your video in Arkansas, planting lettuce under a bin. I was hooked………I have watched you since then. I do not watch every single video, but I even got my husband to watch. The drone video of your new home, was breathtaking to me. I showed my husband, your whole property. He thought I now wanted to move to south carolina, but I just love your property. I love watching you 'design' everything. We LOVE guns, but my FIL, left us 10 guns, so we are learning to protect ourselves. We built 5 counter height planter boxes, to grow vegetables in. This last year, we got so much snow, the Titan arch over our vege boxes, broke. This year, my green beans refused to grow [as they dont have the trellis to grow over, so the cucumbers didnt grow either. I was heart broken, so I turned to your videos, to try to learn 'what' I did wrong. We will watch ALL of your videos. Thank you.

  5. I’ve followed you closely for years. YEAARSSS. This is the first video in a long time that I saw a fire in you that has been missing. We don’t hold all of the same values, but I love seeing you passionately and boldly sharing yours! So refreshing! Love this!

  6. It's hard to not fall in love with all the animals. We always had a cow named t bone and milk dud…they got replaced every year and the new ones were called t bone and milk dud..A short time after 100 bunnies resulted in lots of chicken…it is what it is..

  7. Jess you are fun to watch. The problem is that we the viewers hide behind this wall and because we have animinity we can say whatever we feel like and be mean and hurtfull because nobody knows who we are. Just a bunch of cowards who would never say this stuff to your face. I think like my mama said, If you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all.

  8. Jess, I have watched you from the beginning!! I rarely comment but I am always talking to you right through whatever device I’m watching you on!! I so feel in alignment with you! Authenticity should be demanded!! Thank you for being you and showing up!! That’s why I continue to watch and learn! You help me be a better me because you are you!!

  9. I agree with everything you said. People live too far away from their food and don't get it. Giving an animal it's best life before it becomes food is the best for that animal. Thank you for all you do for your animals. Those roasted pumpkins are beautiful! Blessings.

  10. Thank you for the authenticity! I'm among the vegetarian viewers who understands what you are doing is worlds more ethical and sustainable than some consumeristic vegan diets. Its hard and highly respectable. I think a lot of the hate comes from people in an urban environment who just don't understand rural life and refuse to learn. I grew up in the city but dream of getting out and homesteading someday if I can get the money up. I've used so many of your tips and tutorials in my urban garden. Wishing you the best ❤

  11. I just don’t understand why someone complains about you on your videos/life!? WHY watch if they don’t like or disagree with your lifestyle?? Sounds like a keyboard warrior with to much time on their hands. I am sorry.

  12. Vegetarian here who does all the shopping. I always say that vegetarians know the best butchers! 😂 It’s so important to me to find meat for my family that is from an animal that was treated well. I have had to learn how to cut raw meat and prepare it. Thankfully most butchers can answer my questions! You do what you have to do!
Keep being wonderful you!!! I see your darling heart!

  13. Go ahead and throw those curtains open lady! We are here for it! I love your honesty so don't hold back. The bible even says "The world will hate you" John 15: 18-20. We are not here to be friends with everyone but honestly I'm really freaked out by how judgmental and self righteous the world has become. A society that preaches "individuality and acceptance" but practices cancel culture and public shame. People would have much more rich and vibrant lives if they opened their mind up to consider others' perspectives and beleifs. If your beleifs and foundation of values is strong you wont feel threatened by other's ways of life.

  14. I was vegan for 8 years. I made the conscious decision to eat ethically raised and “harvested” animals about three months ago. I completely agree with you. I will not support the factory farming of animals.

  15. I believe it’s wise not to share everything especially food and weapons. Only for you and you really don’t have to justify that you really are doing it. But you know that all already. God Bless.

  16. I love you showing up Jess and you are funny and real and kind and grounded. You are a great communicator! Your authenticity and weighing of opposing opinions to settle on your own is empowering. Refreshing talk!
