  1. I probably should have commented on why I heavily pruned the camellia. It was suggested by a keen gardener Japanese friend of ours. She said that the pine tree should be the centre piece there and it would look more balanced if the camellia was shorter. (It was getting out of control a bit anyway). Originally, the camellia (and pine tree) would have been much smaller, carefully pruned and shaped (you can see the bend in the pine tree), as is typical in a more traditional Japanese garden.

  2. Do u use smoke to keep mosquitoes out of the house…? On another channel with an old Japanese home, the Japanese nephew who inherited his uncle's house (which needs a lot of work), he points out a flat bed just inside the entry where I take off your shoes. He explains that coals are kept bur int there in traditional homes and although it is indoors itnis ok because the ceiling immediately above this area is open intentionally to the rafters, and the smoke is channels into the rafters intentionally along the areas open to the outside. Apparently mosquitoes hate the small if smokes wood (his uncle's home was madenof cherry, largely). So, in summer, even with the screen doors open there mosquitoes are kept out.

Did u find this entry area in your traditional home as well?

  3. I love your amazing house and the work you have done on and around it. It is such a shame that so many of these marvellous structures are disappearing. You have created something very special by preserving this beautiful house. Enjoy your little paradise 👍

  4. wow what a long way your home has come! ive been following since the very 1st episode! 3 years already! blessings for many more!

  5. Do the flouers grow back after the winter? I remember you getting snow. I guess they wither but sprouts come again in spring, right?

  6. Apologise if you already know this but carful with that Foxglove and the kids (and adults tbf) the seeds it sheds cause cardiac arrest if consumed.

  7. 日本家屋いいな〜
    もし自分もこんな良い所に住めたら、庭に梅と桜の木を植えて、小池を作り、灯篭を置きたいな😂

  8. I think the only thing missing is a water feature to just put the icing on the cake. Relaxation personified. Great content as always

  9. It would also be cool to see periodic interactions with your neighbours and tours of your locality now that you have settled in there. As idyllic as it may sound, it is also a part of life that will be interesting to explore.

  10. You're going to have a battle with caterpillars since you got rid of 2 hornet colonies; they prey on caterpillars quite well. Perhaps you can encourage nesting birds in your area so they can use up the caterpillars.

  11. look at that accomplishment! Everytime excited when I am looking a videos of yours (again). Thanks for the vlogging!

  12. What a wonderful job you are doing. Such a huge task and such hard work. Most impressive. Would it be alright with your neighbour if you put the boys' goal post on the abandoned farmland that you share the responsibility for in keeping the weeds down? It would save your lawn. Just a thought.

  13. I have to turn on my equipment before I try to start it? Very good advice, I'm glad I watch these videos 🤔

But seriously this garden is starting to look amazing! I love to see all the work you put into it, thanks for making these videos! Also, I'm a huge fan of the soccer net in the yard, something I wish I had growing up!

  14. When it comes to ground cover, those years fly by! I live in the United States where our landscaping has a lot of sharp lines and planes, with less flow commonly seen in English gardens. It only takes a few years for the ground cover to give an overgrown effect. Feel free to plant bulbs under it to give it texture and color when it's not in bloom, and still look out for weeds that grow close to the ground. I always look forward to your garden videos and can't wait to see all the hard work you do come to life!

  15. Amazing, unbelievable. I am going Fukuoka Japan and going to buy an Akiya house myself. You are defiantly my role model to following. Admire you.

  16. Please give some sort of slower steps about the garden. Your garden is beautiful, and I want to learn how to do it. Thanks.

  17. The deer, hare and wild boar haven't discovered your lush garden yet? It took six or eight years before they decided our yard was a lovely smorgasbord. Since then they have devastated our formerly beautiful plantings. Then we suffered a flood caused by log jams against the bridges by timber-cutting rubbish off the mountainsides during an extremely wet typhoon. Now I'm struggling with getting a fence up, and it will have to incorporate hog wire, making it less than aesthetically pleasing. The thing is, we're way down in the southern end of Mie Prefecture, and the typhoons have become so fierce that I don't dare put up the picket fence I originally envisioned.

  18. The time has gone so fast. I remember when you first bought the house. All the dedication and work you've done over all these years has truly paid off. You've breathed life and joy back into this beautiful home 🙂 😍😃😍

  19. Deep inside of me , I always want to buy a traditional Japanese house, I’m Chinese and living in Europe, don’t feel like I belongs to here, your house and garten is like a dream ❤ when I first found your channel I already know that I finally found what I need for so long time 😊

  20. all your videos are showing up here again, such a beautiful home now, it's a real joy and pleasure to see all you and your wife have
    accomplished

  21. You took the beautiful garden wall down! Now you have a great view of your neighbors

  22. Yeah, you trimmed those side yard trees…very, very, very nice…now, they look 'right' – considering the handsome home you have behind them. Well done!

  23. if you don't want to (or rather don't have the time to) mess with all the wax trying to harvest honey from a future beehive, I recommend the "Flow Hive"
