Roots and Refuge Farm: A year after getting sick… (plus cowboys, ducks and a lot of basil) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I don't think you will see the episodes with Tricky woo and her starchy old owner, they are very old. James Harriot was a wonderful writer, I only saw the series, I never read the books.

  2. Jess its wild how our bodies tell us what we need. My granddaughter Piper has SEVERE food allergies to the point of several admissions one being a month long. During all of this she was diagnosed with EoE due to gluten allergies we didnt know she had. As a result they also discovered she has gastroparesis and is now on a GJ tube for nutrition. We still dont know the prognosis long term as she is only just turned 3 in july. I will continue to pray for you and your journey of maximizing your health! ❤ Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

  3. I’ve been watching your videos forever and I’m 22 on my second homestead (this one’s completely off grid) and I just wanted to tell you I have 2 steers (formerly bulls) ones name is Bullcephus and the other is Cow-Liga. I knew I loved you even more when you said your bulls name was Bocephus ❤️

  4. I love the sound of turkeys.🦃 I had a Red Bourbon Tom that I raised from a tiny chick. I used to have gobbling conversation with him. I really loved that turkey.

  5. Lovely vlog, Jess! When you mentioned James Herriot, I could just sing! I turned 51 yesterday and grew up reading his book series. I had wanted to become a veterinarian until one of the many days I worked with our large animal (mobile) vet and he had to put down a pasture-boarded horse who had a compound fracture, which at the height of summer had become horribly infected and infested. The gore and creepy-crawlies did not bother me as much as the pain in the poor animal's eyes and the apathy of the owners. I cried more for that poor horse that day than I care to admit, but that experience turned me away from veterinary medicine. I knew I was too soft-hearted to be able to not be angry at people like that who neglected their animals (didn't check on them very often) and didn't care about them the way I did. At any rate – love how much the books and movies (and tv shows) can bring folks together. 😊

  6. I taught middle school English and a series my students loved (especially the boys) was a trilogy by Jean Craighead George that started with My Side of the Mountain. The Hatchet series is also really good for young boys (by Gary Paulsen). There are movies adapted from both.

  7. I love that shirt Jess. That's one of my favorite quotes. ❤
I named my sourdough starter after my dog that passed away a few years ago. She was my shadow.
That was one of my favorite movies too. I have the dvd lol I don't even know how many times I've seen it. Enjoy movie night! 🙂

  8. I loved listening to your conversation with your boys. I miss my little boys, they are 22, 24 and 27 now!

  9. So sorry for the animals that will be slaughtered and eaten. When will we understand that we 🎉do not have to kill animals to be healthy. How can you love animals then kill them?

  10. If you don't take the time to rest, heal, and listen to your body- your body will eventually make that decision for you and it won't be the most convenient time/place. You don't want the body to decide for you, because it may land you in the hospital. I've learned that the hard way as well, and I've worked hard since to ensure that I am listening to what my body is telling me and take time to rest.

  11. Ben's little moth reminds me of my little ones homestead find this week. My 7 year old daughter found a rabbit skull out by our butcher area, it is now her new favorite toy.

  12. put some flat rocks in and out of the tub. That way they can get in and out. you are correct about the moth. 5 spotted Hawk Moth. All Baseball movies. All Creatures Great and Small.

  13. How funny! I redid my sourdough start last week! Tomorrow will be first bread making day. 🥳 I've have to think of a name

  14. I must have read The Secret Garden a couple dozen times as a kid. Loved the James Harriot books too. So much abundance on your property right now. In meat, in garden, and in boys enthusiasm and stories!

  15. Jess, I take a zip tie and run it through a loop on the top part of the fence, Markov the loop big enough to go over the post on the other side. Cut the end of so it's not pulled on. It's allot easier than jabbing to tie and un tie the fence closure. 😊

  16. I've just come home from looking at a proeprty, and put in an offer! Now I get to relax and watch a nice video from Jess as I try not to stress or get too attached to it 😅 There are already 3 full price and above offers, I don't have the best odds, but all I can do is pray. If its the right property it will happen, if not I can keep looking

  17. James Herriot books! My favs! I have donated most of my books, but these are still mine. I can't give them up. I love him, his life, and all his stories. Wonderful man and vet. Helen and his children are also lovely. The TV episodes are good but not as good as reading his books and seeing his vision in your mind. Nice that you kids like watching. He lived in Yorkshire.

  18. Your young boys are so precious! Thanks for sharing your family, your farm, your faith, and your life with us!

  19. I loved James Herriot's books. What stood out in my mind was his way of finding good in the most difficult people and compassion for the most challenging animals. You have that same quality Jess. Enjoyed seeing your boys. Im so happy your health has improved & exceeded expectations. After your last video, I decided it was time to make my own healthier version of Raspberry Vinaigrette. It was delicious! It felt good knowing I was not serving my family Xanthum gum fillers and Canola oil that can cause stomach upset & allergic reactions. Keep up the good work, you are such an inspirational delight! I'm enjoying your podcasts with so many gems to reflect upon!

  20. I hope thy enjoy Secret Garden. One of my favorites also. Saw it preformed live in the theater. It was spectacular!!

  21. I love the James Herriot books and visited Thirsk (the village) and surrounding Yorkshire Dales where he worked. I arrived late and booked onto the closest Bed and Breakfast to the tourist information centre and by sheer dumb luck found I was staying in a bedroom that overlooked the yard behind the surgery. That book was a joy and delight in my teenage years. I read it again decades later and it was a source of courage and encouragement. I mean if this humble man could go out in the cold and dark and face discouraging circumstances- well I could put on my big girl boots and face my own challenges square on.

  22. You are my daughters age… and we also enjoyed ' Road to Avonly ' I don't think it is spelled that way but we so enjoyed that while living the farm life.

  23. My oldest loved The Sandlot!
I'm so happy that you are feeling better, that's wonderful!
Your boys are a delight. <3
