In today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share a common mistake new onion growers often make growing onions. Onion bulbs grow based on day length, and new gardeners often fail to plant onions at the proper time and day length for their location. This video shows the consequences when planting onions at the wrong time. Don’t make this critical mistake growing onions!

Thanks! I haven't tried growing onions yet so this is good advice.
Great info π Thanks π

Question: I live in SoCal 9b. I bought short day yellow onions. When should I sow my seeds in my starter cells?π
Hello
Iβm in the blue colored belt. Soil snow/freezes, mid May is when we are able to start prepping and planting for the garden. And weather starts changing in mid August, so we have a very short growing season.
Not really sure about the solstice. Would that be the summer date solstice.
That only gives us about 2 to 2 1/2 months of growing onions. Thanks for your guidance.
Just start your onion seeds in September/october and overwinter them in ground, then you won't have this problem
How do you know which variety is long day onions? Will it say that on the seed packets? Iβve been learning a lot from you. Thank you so much.
I don't grow onions, but perhaps I will start. I prefer the smaller bulbs bcuz there's less waste for me. Usually I just need your current harvest size but stores carry these humongous onions that I can't use up before spoiling.
And he's got big bulbs,
And she's got big bulbs,
But we've got the biggest bulbs of them all π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§ π§
How do you know when to start seeds indoors? Tried to go off of seed packet and they were tiny.
β damped off on meβ what does that mean? I have to say though my onions are inferior to the previous year. So your advice is perfect.
Wow, I never knew this! No wonder my onions are small! π. Thank you for this extremely useful info! I'm going to buy some long season onion seeds today!ππ I live in Northern Ohio.
I have cultivated the onions from the sets this year. I planted them at the beginning of May and I took them out last week, but I don't know, they didn't get very big, they are bigger than yours in video but again are not enough. From the beginning of May until June 20 we had extreme rain, then the extreme heat that accompanied us until today without rain at all.
! I removed them because all the green leaves withered. I live in Europe where the climate is identical to that of Pennsylvania. Maybe you have some suggestion for me
Ahh I have had that this year too. Tiny onions still work lol
My zone have sun and head about 300 days of the year
Youβre in the same growing zone as me and so is Lazy Dog Farms, and you sow your onions in January to grow through Spring, while he does his in fall to grow through winter. Hopefully, one day Iβll figure out what works for me. So far, consistent failure at growing onions.
Have you quit working out? Its time to get back at it, Im starting this week π»
You held up two different types and varieties matter in size. In Z5a we donβt harvest and prefer not to harvest till august. Itβs the layers of thickness on your seedlings that will get the larger onion also.
Look loke 2 different variety as well
How do you prevent damping off?
We had a problem with getting the starter onions. I ordered in January and they came in way to late. I went to local providers and they said there was an issue a
nd they had none.
Great video, very helpful thanks.
How do i know it's a timing problem or if it's because i grew the wrong type of onions?
I had a terribly small harvest compared to years past here in New Hampshire. My onion greens all developed botrytis leaf blight due to the nonstop rain we had in June/July and the bulbs all suffered dearly.
For two years I planted in November I live in georgia zone 8a and I had great results, I planted again in March if I followed your steps and only harvested small golf balls, I think that as gardeners it is good to experience apart from knowing the correct variety for each climate and weather correct for planting helps to have greater success in crops
I had the same type harvest this year……..I'm in Davie County NC zone 7/7b when would be the best time for me to transplant my onion sets?
I came for a 2 Minute Garden Tip and got a 3.28 garden tip. That's 1.28 I can never get back. lol But thanks for all your tips.
I am in Greenville NC. I plant my onion seeds in early September, then get them in the ground in November. They stay in the ground all winter. I usually harvest June. I have one in my hand that weighs 14.69 oz. So pretty good size!
Iβd love to try and grow onions next year. Thanks for the tip!
I live in ga on the 7b 8a line leaning more towards the 7b side of things , I plant my onions every year around the end of November early December and over winter my onions to where they can get good vegetative growth early and when it is time for them to start bulbing when spring comes around they are always ahead of the game . Onions are very cold tolerant and can take a freeze but can get damage during a hard freeze . You being in zone 8 most people and farms a little south of me go in the ground around first to second week of November . This may help you get a larger bulb
Nothing wrong with those onions.
Small onions are tasty too! ππ
One item Iβve started doing for bunching onions: when I get a bunch from the grocery, I put them into a jar of water and leave them on the window sill. Roots will start growing and when I want one, I cut off the bottom 1β above the roots, then take an put into my planter outside. Iβve been able to βcut and come againβ my green onions for a while now, lol
What caused your seedlings to fail? I'm having a hard time with my brassica seedlings right now. They're all getting leggy. π’ what's your advice?
