With the temps soaring, I decided to swing by Calloways Nursery and check out their inventory with a little plant nursery tour. Although there weren’t many plants to have, I still managed to find a great deal!

I had Mona lavender last year it was beautiful!!! I haven't been able to find it this year, not a perennial in my zone.
I grew castor bean from seed this year; its a beautiful plant. Also, I just ordered from Botanical Gardens last week and already got my seeds. You might try ordering the bells of Ireland. One of my favorites.
Yesterday our heat index was 117 we have never had this type of heat here in Kansas since I've lived here but I've only been here like 5 years
Pentas are still going strong here in Florida, planted them in spring in pots. I do deadhead maybe once a month.
Wow! I'm gonna have to hit my Calloways!
I just went to my Calloway yesterday and the selection was even slimmer than what yours has. Still had a few good things… I didn't even check the pottery!!!! I been wanting some of those rectangular pots! I bet I missed them..probably all gone now! ๐ฎ ..and heavens yes it has been extremely hot! I pray we cool down in Sept! โค
I'm looking forward to the cold front moving through next week, it'll be a blessing to get back into the mid 90's if only for a few days. I haven't bought any new plants in so long I'm going crazy but 105+ is just too hot to get out there and plant anything.
Great score on the rectangular pots. The coleus seemed very expensive. Mine are growing so rapidly , that I am constantly taking cuttings and putting in new free plants. Hope you get a break from the heat soon. We're getting a cold front in Maryland. Wish we could send some of it your way.
Callawayโs doesnโt seem to have stores in Upstate South Carolina, but I will check Loweโs for pots. Iโm looking for small pots I can use for seedlings too big for seed trays. Normally I would plant them outside, but it is way too hot. The heat makes me sick if Iโm outside for more than 30 minutes. Air conditioning is a blessing.
Went to my Calloways for pottery and had no luck. ๐ Did you get it all, Amanda? ๐
Love your 90% off terracotta! Calling our Calloways now:) Thanks!
Eden brothers has Bells of Ireland seeds
the terra cotta pots with the holes in the sides are orchid pots !! Girl, you scored big time with those planters – well done !!!
Sorry you didn't have more luck with plants. The big box stores in my area, Wilmington, NC, have very low inventory. We don't have anything like Calloway's. I have some annuals that are way past prime. I am trying to limp things along til fall.
Amanda remember that Calloways has a coupon for $10.00 off a $50.00 purchase! They also have a free membership where they keep track of your purchases and they add rewards to your account. I agree with you I find that Calloways products are better quality than some other garden centers.
You should try the Caster Bean, its pretty! The first time we heard of it,my brother was looking for a way to it rid of moles, our cousin suggested castor beans as they were poisonous ( supposedly ) so he got on they internet to find someโฆnext thing they new two men showed up to talk to them. They were from Homeland Security !!!! Just wanted to see what they were going to do with ll those seeds ๐๐ of course by that time they had checked him out but we had a good laugh about it! He was the retired Fire Marshal for the state of Oregon !!!
None of my pro-cut Burpee (of all seeds) red sunflowers produced this year. Five different places; no blooms.
If you want to grow a pineapple, stick the green top into soil and another will grow from the center. You might need to do it in a pot as they take a while to growโฆ
I've grown Castor beans for over 25 years. Got the seeds from my MIL and have grown them every year. Get them!
Still in survival mode here trying to keep grass and trees alive. Don't have a Caloways here, but will check out some of our local nurseries to see if they have their pots on sale. You got some beautiful planters at an amazing price. Ok, time to do my rain dance… stay cool.
Yeah๐
Awesome special. So glad for youโค
A couple of weeks ago I went to Loweโs and they had a random 90% off of the clearance rack! 3 trips in and out later, I had completely stuffed my jeep from front to back. I live in Tx also and I am trying to wait till the heat to ease up before planting. I had so much fun! Such a blessing โค
I bought a couple of replacement annuals last week to take me into fall: Vermillionaire, Dark-leafed Alternanthera and Flamma Orange Celosia (this saved me having to buy a pack of seeds, too!). I'm also taking cuttings from my coleus to put into smaller containers since they won't have time to get as huge as they are right now. If you see one next year, buy a Mona Lavender Plectranthus. You can take cuttings from it like you would a coleus and overwinter inside. The kawaii soiree vinca is a great annual, too, and I think underused. The flowers are smaller than the standard vinca, but the plant gets to be a 1'x1' rounded plant that is covered with blooms all summer long and takes all the sun and heat you can throw at it. I would choose this over sunpatiens any day. They're just hard to find, for some reason.
Park Seed has Bells of Ireland seed
Zone 8A NC. I've grown the castor bean and they are very interesting and have returned on a limited basis. Thanks
I was not so lucky at my local Calloways but did get a few items that I needed.
Can't wait to see what you plant in those pots.
Great tour of Calloway nursery! I have never seen terra cotta pots for orchids thou (the ones with extra holes). Thanks for taking us along ๐
