Make your own plant pot hanger with just one cord | Gardening hacks | Gardening Australia

Millie demonstrates an easy way of making a pot hanger using nothing more than a loop of cord!

Materials needed

Sash cord, cotton rope or synthetic rope (synthetic rope is less likely to rot but may be affected by UV). Adjust the length according to pot size and how long you want the hanging handles. For this 15cm diameter pot, Millie used approx. 180cm of rope.
Flat surface to work on
Pot plant!

STEP 1

White cord in loop on table
Tie the rope to make a loop and arrange it on a flat surface in the ‘boomerang’ shape. (Make sure that you use a knot that is secure and won’t work itself loose.)

STEP 2

Hands looping white cord on table
Holding the bottom section of rope, twist hand to form a loop.

STEP 3

Pot being placed on top of looped white cord
Place pot on the ‘X’ (where the rope crosses).

STEP 4

Hands looping white cord on table

Take the top strand and tuck it under the loop at the top of the pot…..

STEP 5

Terracotta pot sitting on white cord being looped and tied
….then pull the loop upwards.

STEP 6

Lift this loop over the pot and below the other sections of cord

STEP 7

Terracotta pot sitting on white cord being looped and tied
Grab the loops either side of the pot and stretch them out in a sideways direction from the pot. As you move outwards, pinch the sides of the cord below…..

…then stretch these cords upwards to form the ‘basket’ of the pot holder.

  1. Well that was pretty cool and simple,, gotta find me a piece of rope and try that out ,, thanks

  2. Extra useful because you don't end up with a destabilizing giant macrame knot at the base of the pot, which makes it difficult to place the pot on a flat surface to do… whatever… from time to time!

  3. Thank you. I found this while searching for a video to remind me how to use this method to lift large pots. 30ish years ago an older gentleman showed me this with a larger rope and larger circle. He then looped it over big clay pots to make it less back strain for moving those pots around. I was young enough then that I did not use it much but now I need it for the 12"-14" pots. I don't have a method to share this suggestion with others but perhaps you might share.

On this man's loop he had threaded 2 old pieces of garden hose to use as hand grips to make it easier on hands as well.
