This trellis was loosely inspired by a Torii gate, a piece of traditional Japanese woodwork used to mark the entrance to a Shinto Shrine or other sacred space.
I started this build before I had a video camera so this short film is just as much about experimenting with camera angles, techniques, and editing as it is about woodworking. There’s even a little homage to one of my YouTube heroes as I try stop motion for the first time!
This can definitely be a DIY project but there is some more advanced joinery that isn’t covered in this video. Be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss next week’s video and follow me on Instagram @davinamakes to get the inside scoop on current and future projects.

This video turned out amazing. The trellis looks beautiful and super classy.
Always a joy to watch you work, Seth. Beautiful job!
THE MUSIC SUCKS
While I enjoy your woodwork, the idea of a "shinto treillis" is a bit of a paradox because – as you said – a torii is a entrance gate whereas a treillis is blocking the way 😉
I have that exact same ring! I also had one made in gold because I liked it so much! I will show this video to my husband. I need one of these!!!!
What’s the metal in the middle called ?
I'm pretty sure the best instruction is on woodprix.
There is no such thing as a Shinto Trellis. It would be far better to say a Torii Gate inspired trellis. Calling it a Shinto trellis is about as insensitive as placing three crosses with wire stretched between them and calling that a Christian trellis.
Wish you would post a pic of the the trellis installed in landscape.
