My Mom’s Backyard Garden Tour 2023 | Part2 Raspberry Patch Trellis Blueberry Rows & Asian Persimmons

This video is actually the second in the series of My Mom’s Garden Tour 2023 (even though in this video Aiman said it was the first). The first was actually the irrigation video we published last month titled, “Amazing Drip Irrigation System For Backyard | How My Dad Designed It & 1st Tour Of Mom’s Garden 2023”. We’ve done a few videos like this in the past few years but instead of showing the entire garden, this year we will focus on a few section at a time and highlight the changes we’ve made since the last time we did the video. If you love gardening and planting fruits in the backyard, here are the #ad links to some of the live plants, seeds, tools and supplies you may need for this type of projects:

Raspberry cultivars can be divided into four groups, based on their fruit color: red, golden-yellow, black, and purple. Red cultivars are by far the most common. Everbearing red raspberries are self-pollinating and have two crops, which make them a favorite for the home garden, as well as commercially. Heritage Everbearing Raspberry is picked by gardeners for its flavor, firmness, and large fruit size.

Blueberry plants break down into five main categories: Northern highbush, Southern highbush, lowbush, half-high, and rabbiteye. Growing requirements and fruit characteristics vary between and within these groups, but in North America, most grow somewhere from April to late September.

Plump, juicy blueberries aren’t just delicious. They’re high in nutrients, antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins. Fortunately, for very little effort, blueberries are easy to grow—if you have the right soil conditions. When selecting blueberry bushes, the best choice is bare-root two- to three-year-old plants. Older plants suffer more transplant shock and will take a few years to begin producing large harvests. Blueberry bushes are generally planted in the early to mid spring. In USDA Hardiness Zones 6 and higher, they also can be planted in the late fall.

Last year we bought 2 sets of Asian Persimmons – Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro & Maekwa Jiro. They bore fruits last year, very tasty but this year they did not. We’re hoping to show you the fruits next year.

What Is a Persimmon? Persimmon trees are members of the Ebony family (Ebenaceae). Ebony is the type of wood often used to make black piano keys, while persimmon wood specifically is sometimes used to make golf clubs.

Asian (Diospyros kaki) and American (Diospyros virginiana) persimmons differ in size, native range, cold hardiness, and flavor. American persimmons are astringent when unripe but very sweet and soft when ripe. Asian persimmons can be either non-astringent (sweet but firm when ripe) or astringent.

Asian persimmons, unlike their American cousins, are often self-pollinating, and they can even produce parthenocarpic fruit from unfertilized flowers. That resulting fruit won’t have seeds, so it can’t reproduce. Asian persimmons are native to central China.

Fuyu persimmon: Fuyus are a Japanese persimmon variety and one of the most common Asian persimmons in grocery stores and farmers’ markets throughout the US. They are a seedless, non-astringent variety.

In the next video we will show you another section in our backyard garden with Blackberry, grapes, beds of pepper, lemongrass and more…. So stay tuned.
