I’m so happy to have received a baby from this lovely Dieffenbachia from the River Tai Chinese Restaurant (92 Harbord St. – #notsponsored). The owners told me they regularly air layer the base of the trunk so they can replant it to sit at a lower height, which keeps the foliage close to the pot.

️⃣ The plant lives a few feet away from the storefront’s South facing window (floor to ceiling)

️⃣ Since there were some pups/off-shoots from the base of the plant, they gave them to me when they repotted the mother plant.

️⃣ See how the section of trunk that was in the metal cans with soil sprouted roots? That’s the principle of air layering: getting roots to sprout from the main stem above the soil level by “injuring” the main stem and surrounding it with potting medium (usually sphagnum moss but as seen here, plain old soil works too)

️⃣ They told me to separate the babies but I want to try producing a 2-3 stem grouping with the mother stem intact! I’m super excited to see how this grows! Huge thanks to the Chong family 🙏🌿
