Nope. I bought a house in 1996 and asked specifically if there was an HOA and was told no. Finished sale with no documentation about any HOA. A year later I get a letter in the mail demanding membership dues.

You never own shit. HOA tells you what you can and cant do to a house you "own" you need permits from the city to do any modification to your house and you pay property tax every year even when the house is paid off.

I agreed at the signing and then I decided I didn't want to agree anymore.
People who cry about HOAs are the same people who dont vote and then cry about their government.
An HOA is a government complete with laws, elected officials, taxes and punitive actions. If you dont like your HOA get involved, attend meetings, maybe run for the board yourself.

HOAs are either wonderful and keep your community nice without being overbearing, or they are money hungry assholes who just constantly increase dues and give citation for tiny shit to charge fines.
dude, i feel like hoas are dumb but worst of all someone filed a complaint on us not too long ago because my dog barked, shes generally a well trained dog, but HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO STOP MY DOG FROM BARKING ONCE OR TWICE, also we eventually figured out who it was, because everyone else in the neighborhood has dogs basically, but 1 when we asked what they expected us to do they said keep her inside, and 2 ive seen them standing at the top of our driveway, sometimes even playing music essentially asking for my dog to bark
I never ubderstood HOAs, in my country there aren't any, at least not that I know of, so this is baffling to me…

HOAs only make sense in apartment buildings, when you’re in charge of maintenance with all fellow owners. Else I don’t see the point, especially if you can just ask people and be nice.
this is exactly how young couples ruin their life. they put down all the money they have i the world on a down payment and get to signing the paperwork and suddenly your signing forms stating if your car is more than 1 year old in the driveway you will be fined 1000 a day until the vehicle is removed. and the whole time the realtor knew and didnt give a shit cause his job is to sell the house and not have compassion or inform you of the potential trap your buying into.
