When evaluating light *outdoors*, it suffices to simply estimate the number of hours when direct sun that hits the area in question.

When evaluating light *indoors*, you need to be specific about what is physically surrounding the plant – think about #whatmyplantsees

Let me show you what this monstera (top right) sees all around it…2️⃣ The window is but a sliver of the total area of sky. Walls and ceiling (and balcony overhang) block out most of the sky. But this is “okay” for plants that require “bright indirect light”

But remember that your plants that are fresh from the nursery got to see this 3️⃣ for months or years. You can’t see from this photo but the entire roof isn’t just transparent. Commercial nurseries that grow tropical foliage plants use different thicknesses of shade cloth to block and diffuse direct sun. Your plants are doing the best they can given the light situation of your interiors. Don’t put pressure on them (or yourself) if they don’t grow aesthetically the same as from a nursery.
