Fall’s conditions provide plants with the ideal growing environment—cooler, but still warm temperatures and extra moisture from rain. It’s especially important to get flowering shrubs such as lilacs, camellias, rhododendrons, viburnums, hydrangeas, and roses off to a good start, so they should be planted in September.
