Most common Monstera deliciosa question: when will I get leaves with fenestrations (cuts and holes)?

As the plant matures, each new leaf has a chance at being more fenestrated. Most monsteras are started at the nursery with 2-3 leaves per vine and 3-4 vines per pot. If your growing conditions are good, then usually you’ll see the first split leaf on the 7th or 8th leaf (counting along a single vine).

2️⃣ “But how is it that your plant, with so few leaves, already has big fenestrated leaves?” It’s because I took cuttings from a mature plant. The leaves you see here used to be the tip of a growing vine that was more than a dozen leaves into its life.

Common misconception: a single leaf never changes its shape as it matures – if it’s solid, it will always be solid; if it has one cut, it will always have one cut, etc.

Need anything else clarified? Let me know in the comments and I’ll try my best!
