  1. Do you by any chance have a recipe for hamburger buns? I've tried it with regular bread dough and they just don't have the softness I'm looking for.

  2. I reuse any glass jars food comes in to store my lentils , flours, pasta, anything in my everyday working pantry . Therefore saving mason jars .

  3. For Jars ships to Canada free over $50. Really good lids. I’ve used those Kilner. I had a pickle lid buckle in hot water bath. 🤦‍♀️ Only one did that after using a few hundred. So one out of 300, some where pressure canned no problem.

  4. Yes canning supplies are very high priced if you can find a good deal Best Buy it because it will be gone tomorrow ! Toni funny we were talking about acidity in canning vinegar the other day , because I just saw on my grocery store shelf 4% acidity vinegar in large jugs , and right with the 5% next to it, so if someone isn’t checking they could easily pick up the wrong acid level they needed for canning ! I guess the manufacturer is lowering the acid level to save themselves money while still charging the consumer the same price !

  5. Where are Kilner brand jars made? I've never seen them, I'm sure it's a Canada only jar, just curious where they are made.

  6. Hi Toni – Canadian Tire is a great place to buy canning supplies – it’s my go to place – they do a fantastic job of keeping stocks all year.

  7. I keep several dozen jars ( quarts in my case) ahead, bought when I could find them for reasonable. Their purpose is I have a couple of small freezers packed with meat and in the case of an extended power failure I can can that meat without power. I would hate to have to turn steaks into canned beef, but it beats throwing it out or eating 10000 calories a day.

  8. Apparently the war on food has come to canning supplies. High prices, low availability, increasingly inferior products.

  9. Here in Michigan prices on canning jars have jumped terribly!!😢 The store I usually buy from (Meijer) quarts went from 14.99/case of 12 to 20.99 in the last 2 months!!!😮

  10. I'm in the states,a store by me called Meijer has canning stuff buy one get one 50% off this week. Going to pick up a few things today.

  11. Thank you for your video.

I've started saving the good store bought jars again. The good jars the local Honey comes in. Some of the Salsa and Pickle jars, and the old favorite, the Cheese Whiz jar. I have all kinds of large Cheese Whiz jars filled with dehydrated veggies with an oxygen absorber.

I'm paying whatever they are asking for lids these days. I believe I paid $3.99 a dozen for my last case of 24 dozen lids. If I wait for the sale, they are all sold out so now I buy them now when I see them.

I save old lids too using the cleaned out tube that they sell Pringles in to store them in. Perfect for regular size lids.

I was raised that you never reuse a lid, … and now I beg to differ. You see, I did some experimenting with old lids when canning jars of water as "filler" in a small batch of product in my large canner. I was taught not to process small batches when a few jars of filler would suffice.

Just common sense. I inspect the lid and only used the best and they all sealed. Some for multiple processing too.

Anywho, I'd reuse lids now for high sugar content Jams and Jellies and for Vinegar Pickles, "if" I had to. Save those new lids for the Meats and Fish.

I can't hatch my eggs without getting roosters and I find one full grown and now dead and deboned rooster fits into a quart jar real nice. I don't debone the legs, I just cut the knob off to make room and to expose the marrow to the process.

I simmer the carcasses in a huge pot with Onions, Celery, (or seed) and Carrots, for two or three days for that real good broth we all love.

I was stressing out about a small grain mill when a Lady here on Tou Yube showed me how she ground her Wheat in an old fashioned heavy duty Blender and I just happen to have the mate of her Blender so I'm not so stressed anymore. After grinding her flour, she sieves it through a wire mesh strainer and throws the larger bits back to be reground if there are any that is.

Did I tell you about boiling up a pot of wheat gruel? Turns out it's very chewy and very bland. Nothing wrong with bland because I can always "work" with bland.
Maybe cooking the Wheat longer or in a pressure canner would get rid of the chewy but I'm not there yet.

I was reading where in the days of old, they would sprout the wheat, grind it wet, and let the wet dough sit overnight before turning it into bread with the yeast and sugars. Something about the living enzymes turning the glucose into an easier nutrient to digest as it sits overnight.

Some say that glucose intolerant people can reintroduce Wheat Bread back into their diet in this manner but I don't know. It sure sounds feasible to me. You know, start with just a little to start and build up if it works for you.

Anywho, I find lots of reference about letting the dough sit overnight in the days of old and not just with the Wheat dough either. All kinds of different doughs and grains.

Keep up the great work and good luck.

  12. i slowly stocked up on Bernardin lids at dollarama regular and wide mouth when they have them… almost 1/2 the price of the same box at walmart and canadian …. 2020 home hardware had a sale and didnt put in the flyer a limit or while supplies last … so i had them order me 70+ cases of pints for $6 somthing cents and thank God i spent the money on them at that time because they are more than double that price now and last year i found $5 off any case of Bernardin canning jars so i printed a ton of coupons and bought as many as i could of quarts … i got my glass fermenting weights on amazon in regular and wide mouth!

  13. I use a cut piece of Onion or Apple as a weight when fermenting it works great. Thanks for the videos!

  14. Amazon has alternative canning lids that a lot of homesteaders approve of. You can get 100 in a package. Stocked up on flour today. Interesting times.

  15. I had the exact same problem with the dollarama store's wide mouth lids buckling last year. Won't purchase those again

  16. Hi Toni, a couple of YouTubers I watch have recently mentioned that ForJars now ships to Canada. You will probably find what you need there! Happy hunting 😊

  17. Never heard of Snaptite or Kilner lids or jars. Must be Canadian only. Costs are ridiculous everywhere on everything . Thanks Toni. Have a great evening.

  18. Oh 😯
I loved to have a stainless steel bath canner. My poor old enameled one is chipped all over. Of course, it would help if I stopped using it for other things than canning. LOL 🤦‍♀️

  19. Local thrift stores want $1 a jar. Way too much. Last case of 12 i bought were quarts with lids and rings for $12.99

  20. We found 250 or so canning jars thanks to estate auctions over the past 15 years. Years ago, no even looked twice at dirty cobwebbed filled jars. My dishwasher didn't care – lol. Wow, you have a LOT of stores selling jars! We have only 3 stores to choose from, one being WalMart who never has them on the shelves. The other store is Kroger's (limited quantities) and a very small hardware store. All those stores combined don't have 1/100th the quantity available you showed! With WalMart I learned to order on-line for pick-up, and miraculously they often had jars to fulfill my order. There's probably 100 first-generation Tattler lids in the basement. After a 30% fail-to-seal rate, they were thrown into the dungeon. Good luck with your baby broccoli and cauliflower plants!

  21. Amazon i just found a fabulous stainless steel water bath. My gas stove always gets a pit in the canner. But i broke down got a second presto canner im tired of waiting for 7 quarts at a time . I usually do double batches. Wow great vegetable sales . Weve been warned go stock up doesn't look good unions might be stricking and phizer plant get your meds.Have a great weekend ❤️🙏💯👍🌹

  22. Azure Standard just released their own brand of canning jars and lids. And I can’t believe you can get plants for a quarter! What a steal 🎉

  23. Dollar General had pints (12), at $10 last week, combined a $5 coupon, and got 3 css for $25.
    Didn't need them, but….
And my Walmart had wide-mouth qts at $15. Oyyyy.

When lids were so hard to get in '21, I ordered from off-brands, just looked for heavier weights. Pretty happy with the % of fails [dinner tonight/tomorrow😊], for the cost. Got enough for 3 years. At double the amount of canning I have done last 18 months.

I have replacement gaskets, seal rings, weights, tools .

Turned front company room/parlor into the family pantry and canning storage. Better usage than before.😊

  24. I've been buying the For Jar lids here in the states and I really like them. Not sure if they are available in Canada.

  25. wide mouth lids $7.00,regular $6.50 here in SE Michigan ..is really going to hurt folks .I have enough stored for a few yrs…..I dont can so much anymore, as its only me……when I started out canning regular lids .25 cents a pack.

  26. Toni, did you notice the price of wide mouth lids while you were at Dollarama? I couldn’t see it in the photo.

  27. Instead of glass wrights for fermenting, I found another way. I was able to buy bags of glass stones. I also got sone cotton bags with drawstrings. I washed the beads, washed the bags, and filled them very full. I put the bag of beads into the jar and cover the whole thing with two coffee filters. It works really well and I can reuse those bags over and over again.

  28. Yes the price is crazy for jars, even the ones on Market place, is ridiculous. I did see one for $1.00 a jar, so I that's a good price. I need a new De-bubbler I warped my other one, I was going to get it from Amazon, but so way an I paying $12.99 for it. Seriously???

  29. I actually buy products based on the jars sometimes. A good glass jar is $1 most of the time, so even if something is more expensive, well, you have the jar. Wish manufacturers would do like the old glass mayo jars . . . I still can in them.
