Welcome new followers! I’m all about helping you develop a long-lasting enjoyment of houseplants – when you understand how plants work, you can gain a deeper appreciation for their character and resourcefulness.

It starts by taking a big-picture approach to plant care – it goes like this:
1) Understanding your conditions
2) Try your best
3) Let Nature take its course

This approach will allow you to evaluate all visible imperfections to see if they are truly problems or facts of plant life that you need to accept. Just as in our own lives, we shouldn’t attempt to avoid all problems but rather, learn to be resilient when we inevitably face them.

Example: I’ve had this peace lily for over 5 years. Flowers come and go – they stay white and open for a good 2-3 weeks, then turn brown – you didn’t do anything wrong. 3️⃣ You should cut them off just above where they emerge from the leaf. Leaves come and go although they should last much longer than flowers – probably a year or more. 4️⃣ After several months, tips will eventually become brown. 5️⃣ The oldest leaves (meaning the lower ones in a group) will eventually yellow and fall off. Don’t be under the impression there’s some magical care method that keeps all leaves green forever.

There’s lots more of this sensible approach in my book ‘The New Plant Parent’ (link in profile)
