Fall and Winter Seed Varieties and Seed Haul | Varieties for a High Desert Garden

Hey folks!
It is that time of year to start planning your fall garden. This year I am doing things differently and won’t be succession sowing many summer crops. Instead I have decided to make the focus of my fall garden different varieties of frost hardy plants that are tolerant to heat or cold.

I have a small seed hall for you today, with a bunch of different and new seed varieties that I will be trying out this year as part of my fall gardening experiment. I’ve also got some tried and true favorites for you that I have grown for years with success on this desert homestead. Come along for this FULL fall seed list!

  1. I have SO MANY free wasabi seeds from baker creek. That and the spoon tomato 😂. I’ll probably wait to start my carrots until spring. All my space is filled with tomatoes, peppers, and squash/cucumbers. I have about 300-350 sq ft of garden space and 5 greenstalks on my back deck. We live on a very steep hill (which is so much fun to weed wack lol). i grow lettuce and I would like to try growing some cabbage for sauerkraut. I’m going to try to keep some peppers going in my greenhouse over the winter. I bought some peppers called Hallows Eve. Theyre supposed to be hot (1 million scoville) 😁 and I love hot peppers.

  2. I'm so jealous of all of you who can plant fall and winter gardens. I'm putting in my 2nd succession of cabbage/broccoli and that's gonna be it. This is the fullest my garden will be. I could never do 2 succession of tomatoes. The great cold north does however offer more favorable growing conditions at high summer. So it's give and take.

  3. Here in Alaska, we're lucky to squeeze in one planting of anything, so spring or fall crops are mostly out of the question. Although I'm trying a 2nd planting of radishes and spinach, which may or may not be successful before the real cold sets in. I planted the Japanese Wasabi radishes from Baker Creek this year and they bolted immediately and never bulbed up, even though it was a very cold summer here. But I'll try again next year!

  4. I swear, you look like a steampunk princess with those gears sticking out of your head behind you. LOL!! Sorry, just an observation. Too early and not enough coffee yet.

  5. With carrots, can you put a wood plank over them after you sow them to keep the moisture in until they've germinated? Or would that be more trouble than it's worth?

  6. DeCicco is pronounces De CHEEK oh. No idea how you pronounce Enkhuisen, but I THINK you nailed it! I've had little luck growing broc or cauli here in LC, but I think that's because my entire garden is in grow bags. For me it all boils down to, "Do I want this struggle?" I am SO done with peas, lol. Daikon radish does well for me, surprisingly. I use the Korean type, as they are shorter than the huge Japanese types. Try roasting turnips, they are great. The Uzbek carrots did not bowl me over, either. I love the pelleted Bolero carrot seeds from Johnny's! They store well, too. Pelleted is the way to go. Wasabi radish did not work well for me. My fave radishes are French Breakfast, in addition to the daikon. Brussels sprouts, like kale, are best harvested after at least one frost. I tried growing par-cel one year, another bust. You have lots of space, have you considered building some cold frames? For lettuce, I love Tango here! I also have been VERY happy with Inchelium Red garlic, have ordered it already. Sorry this is so disjointed, I respond while I'm watching the video.
