Make and Plant a Bucket Garden

A bucket garden is a type of self-watering container you can make at home with two five-gallon buckets and a few basic supplies. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to grow vegetables and herbs in containers, even if you don’t have space for an in-ground garden. The five-gallon buckets can be found for free at restaurants, bakeries, and groceries stores — just ask for them! Here University of Maryland Extension specialist Jon Traunfeld demonstrates the supplies you will need and how to set up a bucket garden. In a 5-gallon container like this, you can plant tomatoes, peppers (1 per bucket), herbs, and leafy greens.
