Edible Gardening

Abundance on the Farmstead – Potatoes, Onions, Blueberries, Squash, Flowers, Compost & Crazy Weather

We are Dan & Laurie and our land is called Freedom Forest – Its 3 acres in the South of England where we are creating an edible oasis and trying to provide as much for ourselves, from our land as possible, where we are completely off grid.
Our food growing journey began together in 2017 when we created our first No dig lasagne bed. Every year we grow more and more and now we are currently around 50-60% self sufficient in our total food needs and we grow around 90% of the fresh produce we use.
Our style and methods are inspired by permaculture and we try to be thoughtful about how and what we do, to be as gentle on the planet as possible.

In our videos you can follow our journey as we share our experiences and what we get up to at Freedom Forest. Harvests are getting really exciting now and we have been making the most of our edible and medicinal crops this week. We have been sowing seeds, turning compost, dealing with some crazy unseasonable weather and creating beautiful fresh meals with our crops… Lots packed in 💚

We are MASSIVELY grateful that you choose to watch our Videos and support us in this way, however, If you appreciate and get value from what we share and would like to help us a little more, you can become a Freedom Forest Patreon (link below).
It takes us about a day to film some video and another few evenings to edit it, Patreon provides a way you can support what we do with any size donation you wish, it could simply be the value of a packet of seeds! We have many projects coming up, as well as wanting to improve our videos with better camera equipment… maybe even a drone one day to make our videos even more detailed and better quality for you to enjoy! You can help make it viable for us to keep putting the time into making these videos by becoming a Patreon. In return your name will appear in the end credits of our videos and we’ll message you a password for the ‘members area’ of our website where we share more of our favourite recipes exclusively for our Patreon’s 💚

  1. Nice update. The recent wind caused some issues to my tall beans and tromboncino plants, although apart from a few torn leaves they all seem to have survived. i'm getting a bit of blossom end rot on the tromboncino's now though, so i'll be applying some emergency lime to try and help fix the problem (likely a calcium deficiency i believe). The affected fruit is still edible and i've just cooked some up in a delicious fritter (eggs, cheese, spring onions etc) for lunch. Big thumbs up for the tromboncino's so far – they're producing numerous fruit and growing like mad. If your old fruit from last year is still good now that's impressive. I've found butternut squash stores really well, but after about 6 months or so i reckon the flavour diminishes a bit.
Plantain is a superb 'weed' to have growing to hand. There was a time when i'd have been digging them and the dandelions out, but no more. They're far too beneficial and useful to discard.
How are the sungolds tasting relative to the cherokee? My toms this year are just starting to get going (been harvesting one or two a day), but i've been disappointed by the taste so far, so definitely need to try some different outdoor varieties next year.
ps – congratulations on making onto the next page to Mr Dowding!
