  1. Good morning Jeff. I stumbled on your you tube channel earlier this year and you quickly became my ‘go to guy’ for everything garden related for your vast knowledge but also because you’re local and our weather related problems are the same. A couple of questions before you get started -yesterday I discovered blossom end rot on one of my tomato plants. A Roma type. So far the others haven’t been affected even though they are in the same garden bed. I will get mulch applied today – question #1: where specifically do you get the straw you use. I haven’t seen it anywhere (I live in Saanich) and #2. What ratio would I use to foliar spray calcium carbonate? Thanks. Julie

  3. I finally planted the tomatoes outside last Sunday, they were very unhappy in the kitchen for a whole week.they were looking happy outside, then yesterday there were thunderstorms and lots of rain, there was standing water inside the box, so I tipped it. I only had time an hour ago to take them out of that box and put them all in separate pots, if was chucking down with rain when I did this, I came in soaking wet, (second shower of the day) I have no support for them, do till I buy support this week, the two longest stems were tipping over, I have balanced them. I did add fish n bone meal again today because its new soil in the pots even though I added bone meal in the soil last Sunday. It's my first experiment I really hope I haven't killed them 😢. Being in a wheelchair doesn't help I couldn't reach that low on the ground. I really need a raised bed. Thank you for the tons of tips you give Geoff.

  4. Jeff here in Northern Michigan this is year 3 of drought. Last year we put in a separate well for our garden. And did away with our 8-250 gallon rain catchment system. We had so little rain last year that we had to repeatedly fill the gravity feeding tanks with our well. So we now skip the middle man and water beds directly. Until 1 week ago we had only received 1 inch of rain since May 23rd. We got .5 inches last week, and 1.5 inches on Friday. So my well pump got a week long break.😊

  5. I am growing a certain kind of medicinal herb here in south west saskatchewan and just the past couple days i notice heat stress on my plants i started from seed outside directly in the ground back in mid may i notice some of the new growth at the tops now have twisted and deformed leaves i dont know if its bugs that i cant find when i look or nutrients or the heat they was doing just fine till this new heat came in the past few days
    got any ideas ?

  6. 6:36. Large wood chips or the medium or large bark nuggets seem to work best. Especially when you have red purslane and clover growing on top of that. Finer mulch is a pain to work with as it gets everywhere, mixes with the dirt and forms a compact sponge that reduces air flow. Grass and leaves as ground cover are prone to growing mold.

  7. These tips are not just a should to, they are a have to. I live in the south west of the USA where 110 plus every day and the low 90s at night 15% Humidity 15 to 21 mph winds on a consistent basis. The question isn’t when will it die, it’s going to die if you miss even one of these tips.

  8. I am growing in pots and raised beds. Both my raised beds are self-watering. I have been soaking my grow bags in "water pots" every 2-3 days. And, I have 3 inches of mulch in every bag/bed! I am SO grateful for your Quick hints and videos! My peppers, tomatoes, green beans, and strawberries are healthy and fruitful. I am blessed with abundance! Thank you!

  9. I missed one watering of my strawberries beds and it was bad. I had to cut off all the fruit bearing vines and let the poor thing gain its strength again. Several other strawberries did okay and are blooming happily. Never under estimate the power of dehydration. All my other crops are doing great….still not sure how I missed that bed.

  10. I had branches needing a good pruning, so instead of chopping them up, I put them out where they'd dry out. Now I have lots of dried crunched up leaves for mulch. Straw, hay around here is always sprayed to keep weeds, especially blackberry Vines from taking over absolutely everything.
Grass is brown, drought in a rainforest sounds like an oxymoron, but it's here.

  11. Is it ok to mulch with ground up dried leaves? I will be adding ground up dried leaves the fall and mixing it in with the rabbit manure. Mixing the two together has helped, but I not sure if I should use it as a mulch in the summer. I have a leaf vac that grinds them up really fine. Enjoyed Jeff! Take care!

  12. NorCal was 115 in the shade but officially 110. It’s always been like that, people have just gotten softer. Agenda 2030 says ac is not sustainable. He missed the most important one, swells/ditches.

  13. Langley BC here so I can relate. I’m changing my entire profile of plants I grow and where I grow them. Thank you for the excellent information and especially the list of drought tolerant plants. Happy gardening Jeff, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

  14. Great video, thanks! Your link to the watering can for Amazon US isn’t working, sorry. Also you had a link once to those big grey tubs you use for mixing your soil. I’m sorry but I can’t find it. Can you repost or direct me to the video it’s in please? I think it would be big enough to put my grow bags in. They are struggling😢

  15. I've got my grow bags in collapsible dog bath pools! You can get them in much bigger sizes than kiddie pools, and they fold up very compactly when you're done.

Just fill an inch or two of water in the pool on a hot day and the plants water themselves!

  16. Here in Alberta its very dry. We dont get rain much. Last month a ran up a bill $150 for water to water my garden. Awful. I even started reusing dishwater. Gotta get a well or smth… My 1st year gardening is a bit bumpy to say the least.

  17. Jeff😇😇how about water twice ? ( in the morning and evening ? ) thank you for everything😇😇

  18. Thanks for the video Jeff. Always good advice. Just like to say thanks for the tip about soaking seeds in hydrogen peroxide before planting. Had a month long drought here in zone 6. Planted beans anyway, kept them watered. and most all came up.
