Clarifications for #MonsteraMonday – people often read that as a Monstera deliciosa matures, the leaves will develop more cuts and holes (called fenestrations).
–
Unfortunately, this is sometimes misinterpreted to mean that a single leaf will start off with no fenestrations and then develop them as it grows.
–
Observation: the leaf shape never changes for a single leaf – they unfurl already in their final form. Instead, each new leaf has a chance of being more fenestrated than the previous if growing conditions are good. First and foremost is the total visible area of sky.
–
When will your monstera start having fenestrated leaves? Assuming you’ve given it the widest possible view of the sky and you’re considering the tolerance for hours of direct sun (2-3 is okay), then the 5th or 6th leaf on a single vine will start having fenestrations after the first 4 solid juvenile leaves. Note that my plant was made from the cuttings of an already mature plant, which is why it seems like all the leaves have fenestrations.
