Homesteading Couple Hasn’t Bought Groceries in a Year of Self-Sufficient Living

Chris and Stef jumped into self-sufficiency last year when they decided not to buy groceries for an entire year, including staples like salt, sugar, coffee, and flour! Instead, they’ve been growing, catching, raising, and harvesting 100% of their food supply on a small 1/2 acre homestead. They’re only a few weeks away from completing their year-long homestead challenge and they attribute their success to hard work and to the fact that they live in the Southern Gulf Islands where they have a great growing climate and access to the ocean.

Be sure to follow their@LovinofftheLand homesteading adventures – they’re going to continue producing most of their own food even after the challenge is done, and may even announce a brand new challenge later this year!

The couple’s four main sources of food have been:
CATCH – they catch fish, prawns, and other seafood from the ocean
GROW – they grow loads of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices on their land
HARVEST – they forage for things like mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seaweed
RAISE – they raise laying hens, chickens, and turkeys for eggs and meat

Eating only what they produce has drastically reduced the amount of money that Chris and Stef spend on groceries (they still buy hygiene products and other items that are not food and beverages) but a lot of the savings went directly towards building infrastructures like fencing and the chicken coop.

Another advantage of living off the land and sea like this is that they have noticed a huge reduction in the amount of household waste they’re throwing out. Food from the garden doesn’t come in a package!

It was inspiring to meet these two and see all the work they’ve put into learning and working towards their goal of becoming more self-sufficient with their food production. They taught us a ton and we’re looking forward to following along with them. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel which is called Lovin Off The Land:

  1. Thanks for sharing your journey. I live I SW Florida and started my garden in 2021 and it's very rewarding growing what you eat.

  2. people began to notice that despite receiving 13 years of education, they were not prepared to grow up to be self-sustaining individuals. Many of them felt trapped in a dependent system that favored capitalism and the monarchy, but not their well-being.
As the days passed, more and more people began to voice their concerns and demand changes. They realized that the education they received was not comprehensive enough to teach them the basic life skills needed to live sustainably, such as growing their food, building shelter, and tending to livestock.
However, the monarchy seemed unwilling to address these issues and instead used distractions in various forms to delay progress. They invested in entertainment and luxury, hoping that people would remain complacent and distracted from the problems at hand.
But despite these distractions, people persisted. They organized workshops and community events to share knowledge about sustainable living practices and exchanged information about local resources and skills. They came together to build gardens and shelters, and to share their successes and failures with each other.
As this movement grew, more and more people began to take notice. Even some of the teachers began to question the curriculum and the focus on maintaining the status quo. They recognized that their role was not just to teach students but to empower them to become independent and self-sufficient individuals.
Over time, the movement for sustainable living gained momentum, and the monarchy could no longer ignore the demands of the people. With pressure mounting, they began to invest in education on sustainable living practices, and they consolidated all the resources in one place, making it accessible to everyone.
The people rejoiced as they saw the fruits of their labor, and they realized that by working together, they could create a more sustainable and equitable future. The old system of dependence on the monarchy and capitalism began to crumble, and a new era of self-sufficiency and community emerged.

  9. This is amazing! This is how we live too, we eat everything from our garden. We don't eat meat or animal products so it's very simple for us. Great living, process food is the worst thing. You save so much money not eating out.

  10. You're going great guys well done. Rocket is also fantastic in salads, easy to grow and self seeds everywhere, you can also collect the seed from it and most other veges and herbs and makes an awesome soup with a couple of potatoes. You might even be able to scrounge a cup of coffee from these grounds too. Grow peppermint for tea or ginger in hot water is nice. Grow a lemon tree even if its in a pot then take it inside over winter. Get a goat then you have milk, can make cheese, yoghurt etc..grow your pumpkins and make soup and freeze it in small portions. Any veges make great soup. Make some pasta out of your flour. DONT eat your olives unless brined they are shocking straight off the tree. Cheers from Western Australia
