Earth Day thoughts: It’s great that our awareness, perspectives, and practices surrounding how was treat the Earth have changed over the last few decades. We’re moving in the right direction with the goal of living in harmony with our planet.

But with the new awareness and excitement for house plants, why haven’t the perspectives and practices changed from past decades? This is why I wrote ‘The New Plant Parent’ – to take a fresh look at the perspectives/practices of house plant care.

2️⃣ It’s easy to look at this leaf and wonder what’s wrong.

3️⃣ If you can appreciate the biological system, then you can understand what happened: when I took a cutting, this particular vine was left with just one leaf. At the same time, I gave the plant a dose of fertilizer because there was new growth on the other vines. Well now, that leaf had to do all the transpiration work, which would have normally been shared between the other 3-4 leaves that were cut off.

And just as overworked machinery gets worn out, the cells at the tips of the leaf eventually died from accumulated minerals. Am I sad? No, this is the mark of hard work and the reality of Nature’s workflow. If you understand more about biological processes, you’ll be less inclined to jump to the “my plant is dying” conclusion and that relationships have ups and downs.

The main point of my book is this: to expand your appreciation of house plants so they can be living companions, allowed to go through rough times (new perspective) instead of needing to adhere to unrealistic expectations of perfection (old perspective).
