Roots and Refuge Farm: Hornworms Glow (Family time and Peach Shrub) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. In addition to the ice cream, I'd make a few quarts of peach sorbet. So refreshing, especially if you want something with a cleaner taste the the creamy ice cream. Yum.

  2. I used to help my mom at our local senior citizens center. Every summer we had a senior who brought us fresh peaches. I made spiced peaches to serve over vanilla ice cream for the seniors as treat. Just cook your peaches with sugar, cinnamon, ginger and a pinch cloves. It makes a nice chunky peach syrup. Would be great over your homemade ice cream.

  3. Peach onion bbq sauce: adapt from the Victorian sauce in the ball canning book (instead of rhubarb use peaches) I like to change the spices too. Using bbq spices- 1 tsp garlic, 1 tsp worshire sauce, 1 tsp cumin. 😉 good luck!

  4. The first year we grew Barry's Crazy Cherry tomatoes, we had that many blooms and fruit. It was amazing! The last 3 years haven't been quite that impressive. They are still our favorite snacking tomato!

  5. Do an experiment and next season plant basil under or next to half your tomato plants. I plant about a ratio of 1 basil plant to 2 tomatoes or one to three. I bet you won't see ANY tomato hornworm damage on those tomatoes. I haven't for about the 4 or 5 years I've been doing it. And you'll have a ton of basil for your tea and pestos etc.

  6. No way……if i see ANY hornworms by using a blacklight……my hubby is going to get them!!! I found some last year, and he says . Eh just grab it and take it off. I did sndt the dang thing "squeeked" and freajed me out and guess what he did? Fell out of his chair because he was laughing his butt off 😂😂😂 I just told him…if i find any, that its his job lol

  7. That's what I use but also put screen wire on first. It's a lingerie bag. I wrap screen on and tie with nylon rope

  8. Oh you are making me so hungry! Peach smash stuffing (sage and old bread) rolled up in pounded thin, burbon glazed, center cut pork chops… grilled with a heavy hickory smoke. Family favorite. You can do it as a winter caserol in the oven too. Just layer the stuffing under the pork chops with the peaches (halves is nice) on top. So good.

  9. I grew my biggest tomato this year. It was a big rainbow and was 28 oz. I was waiting for it to ripen a little more but then it split from all the rain. Also pepper peach jam with goat cheese on crackers 😮

  10. Can you make a video on how you use your guardian dog(s). Like how you use them, feed them separately, find or source them and how you train them? Thanks.

  11. Ben sure has an arm on him!! If you have any Peaches left, how about using your dehydrator and making some Peach fruit leather? It will make a good snack for later in the year.

  12. I have the over cooking problem too. I cook for 6, but there are only 2 of us now. Luckily we like leftovers. When we get busy we don't worry. We just eat leftovers, and relax.Have fun with your peaches.

  13. Just a thought, you can substitute preserves for sugar cup for cup in ice cream if you feel like some peach ice cream. I did it with some strawberrry and it made a really nice mouth feel from the pectin.

  14. I hope everyone is taking the opportunity to go see “Sound of Freedom” in theaters I pray God heal all those crushed by this evil and bless the efforts of all who fight against it.

  15. Bourbon peach jam is amazing but I can peach halves in a sweet tea. It’s a ball recipe and it is SO good!

  16. Fresh peach ice cream sounds so good. You could make fresh peach salsa. I remember a video of you and Daniel hunting hornworms. I bought a black light flashlight and tried it…and they do glow. I found a few last time I did that. Great tip.

  17. I always just can fresh peaches. Then you can do lots with them in the winter. I live in Oregon, I love the improved Albertas. They are a free stone, and so delicious.

  18. You know that you could do that same peach mason jar but leave out the vinegar and put 5 grams of wine yeast in there and its two weeks until party time.

  19. I used to manage a store where we sold indoor fountains. I used pour a good amount vinegar in with the water and that helped with the algae and made for longer times between deep cleaning. ❤

  20. In The Netherlands we are becoming very concious of not using throw-away stuff like those cups, that you will use only once.. like: so much energy was needed to make them, distribute them, and after to dispose of them.. they paperlike cups with a little plastic in there..

  21. I make a bubbly somewhat dry water kefir lemonade in fliptop beer bottles that would go very well with your peaches. I also love to grate fresh ginger into the lemonade for a ginger ale.
