Here is a perfect example of leaf complexity development on a Monstera deliciosa:

Each subsequent leaf shows a more complex pattern if the plant started from a young cutting. The first few leaves are solid and small [📷 2-5]. As the plant grows in favorable conditions, the next leaves will have more complex patterns [📷 6-7]. Since I got the plant, I’ve had to cut off the first two oldest leaves as they yellowed and returned their nitrogen for the newer growth.

Most articles I’ve read simply state “as the plant grows, the leaves will have more cuts and holes” but this is often misinterpreted as ‘one single leaf will change from solid to patterned as the plant grows’. Now you know better!
