Developer’s Journal: iOS, iOS. Wherefore art thou, iOS?

Almost all phones have an ambient light sensor but on the iOS platform, the light sensor is used strictly to control the brightness of the iPhone screen. Displaying the sensor reading is discouraged and using private API’s could get the app rejected from the App Store.

What about other light meter apps on iOS?

After some research, I found that most light meters on iOS are not using the ambient light sensor but doing a rough calculation of brightness (lux/foot-candle) based on the camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO). I have yet to verify the accuracy of such readings against a dedicated light meter (those gadgets on the table…yes, I’m a bit obsessed but so are your plants!)

So while it is tempting to think “just make an iOS version”, the software development life isn’t so simple. Apple has rules that are different from Android. Nevertheless, I’m pressing on – trying to produce something useful and worth putting my name on.

Android users: you can now find my app in the Google Play Store under “HPJ Light Meter”
