My SECRET WEAPON For Gardening In HEAT WAVES And Drought

In this video, I share my secret weapon for gardening in extreme heat and drought during heat waves and persistent hot weather! Hot weather and strong solar UV index can quickly damage plants and destroy your garden. This amazing garden tool can dramatically reduce or even eliminate garden heat stress and sun damage!

Climates with prolonged high heat and strong sunshine can quickly devastate gardens by burning foliage and killing flowers. Even brief heat waves can cause irreversible damage to your plants. The extreme evaporation caused by hot, sunny weather can dry out soil quickly, causing high water demand. Even mulching and drip irrigation may not be enough. Shade cloths are the answer! Available in various sizes and shade percentages, using shade cloth can protect foliage and flowers from sun and dramatically reduce evaporation so you can water less. In addition, using shade tarp can also protect garden vegetables and fruits from bird damage, insect damage and rain damage, too!

I recommend using a woven shade tarp with grommeted edges. These shade tarps are strong, effective and will last many years.

  2. Southern oklahoma here and we've had triple the amount of rain this season 🤦‍♀️ normally I'd need your set up but the winds here are SO brutal I'd be scared to set it all up.

  3. Excellent advice. I’m in central Virginia and we just had a dry spell where I had to water my wilting plants. This past week, the rain came every day. I’m going to look into that sun shade cover. Thanks again for the video.

  4. In North Granville county NC I grow all my plants in containers in an 8×20 shadecloth hoophouse, and they love it! They even survived 4 straight days of rain and thunderstorms! For me, I think it's the only way to garden in North Carolina. Tempted to build a second one!

  5. @TheMillennialGardener I noticed the melons growing in the background of some of the footage in this video. Please make a video about growing and supporting melons vertically. I have my melon and pumpkin vines growing on the ground and they are taking over my small garden plot.
PS: Great video! I’m trying out shade cloth over my plants on my deck, being inspired by seeing it used in some of your videos.

  6. Im in central florida. Started using shade cloth last year its been great. However i use 70% because its so harsh here.

  7. You can get a shade tarp at your local nursery. I have both the shade and freeze tarps. The tomatoes like the white one (freeze protector tarp) best, it’s cooler.

  8. I have been waiting for this particular video, telling us exactly what you use (40%) for shadecloth.
I checked out your Amazon storefront, but before I purchase, I wanted to hear it from…well, your own mouth. It's in my cart.
Thank you for posting this. BTW, I'm liking your channel more and more, with every video I watch. (Only been here about a week or so…lol.)

  9. Every year I have thousands of tiny white slugs eating my garden , they wipe me out over night ! What are they ? Please help !!? 😲

  10. Awesome videos as usual. Really appreciate the time you spent on doing these. Up here in NE Tennessee near Bristol Tennessee, we have had more than enough rain. I'm afraid my 😊vegetables garden in going to rot. They are not planted straight in the soil but we took the top off, work it up, than put good organic soil on it with different animal manures. I believe it was Kellogg brand. We don't have the best run off, hoping it will be ok. Wish we could give use our rain. I think some is coming your way after it hits us. Thanks for sharing your information. Be safe.

  11. How does your shade screen handle the wind. Here in South Alabama along with the brutal sun and torrential rain, we get wind, big wind.

  12. I am so glad I found your channel – you are so informative and I appreciate all the info you share! I live in B'ham, AL and I just planted a hass avocado tree the beginning of this month. We are expecting temps in the high 90's and one or two days in the 100's this week. I am not prepared at all! Obviously, my tree does not have any fruit on it yet. Is it as important to shade it at this point? Also, I'm guessing before I put T-posts in the ground, I need to check to see if there's anything in the ground in that area, right?

  13. Another advantage of having a shade cloth over your garden is that the lower temperatures are also great for the gardener making garden tasks so much more comfortable even during the heat of the day

  14. I'm battling white flies in my cucumbers and tomatoes. Tried soap sprays , not working too well.
Also have u tried Sashimi long cucumbers, heavy producers of long cucumbers and parthenocarpic

  15. I’m in central NC… I have my 40% shade cloth that I got last year after seeing you talk about them. It’s mid 80s here… should I go ahead and put mine out too?

  16. I just got my 40% shade cloth from your shop, it is a game changer! Thanks so much! Love your channel!
